What is the Best way to turn a burned DVD collection into files to play on PCH C-200? - iStorm - 12-22-2010 09:56 PM

Hi again guys-

Here is the deal... I am a Blu Ray encoder so most of the movies that I watch are in Blu Ray.. but I also have A TON of old burned DVD-R's that are mostly in the DVD structure (Video_TS folder). These were mostly created with DVD Fab so they have menus and all. Some were downloaded AVI files that I converted to Video_TS structure with ConvertXtoDVD, while has a basic click on the movie/menu style.

Its been a LONG while since I have messed with regular DVD's, but the truth is, I don't want these things laying around anymore and there are a lot of DVDs that are burned to blank DVD-R's that probably will never come to Blu Ray so I want to put these on an External Hard Drive that I can store all of them on.

I have hundreds of these DVD's so I need a quick method to get the information off of the DVD and recreate in a structure that I can play on the Popcorn Hour. If I could just strip out the Menu's and extra junk like previews and convert to a file to play on the Popcorn Hour, that would be ideal. I already have all of the security protection off of these so I won't need to rerun through DVDFAB or ANYDVD.. Ideally, I would like an .ISO file with JUST the movie(video, audio, subs) and nothing else.

I know you can play the DVD structured folder on the PCH-C200, but there is way too many DVD's so it wouldn't take long to fill up a hard drive so I need ISO's preferably with just the main movie so they aren't 4.37GB a piece.

If I remember right, I could use IMGburn to make the .ISO and possibly DVDshrink to rip out the main movie off of the Full Menu Disc.

Can any one please help me? I need these out of my closet and do not want to lose any more quality!

THANKS!!!!!!!

If you just want the movie, you could try MakeMKV. http://www.makemkv.com It won't give you an ISO file, but it will allow you to extract just the movie to an MKV file that will play on your C-200. Since it doesn't re-encode the audio or video, it works pretty quick.

Have to agree, for the best untouched DVD rips if you dont need the menu makeMKV is the tool. It doesnt touch the audio, video and subtitles streams.

Oh wow, this program works AWESOME and its fast!!! i used MKV format for my Blu Rays so MKV is perfect!! I have come across a movie that has subtitles yet.. Do you know if it can extract the subs as well for movies that have just forced subtitles? Thanks so much for this recommendation Smile

Quick question.. This most likely relates to how the Popcorn Hour handles these .MKV DVD files.. For some reason if I have my Popcorn Hour C-200 set to "Actual Size" for the movie playback, these MKV's are showing up on my TV as little tiny squares? Like it is a tiny resolution picture or something... In order to watch these movies "normally" I have to make the popcorn hour setup as "Fit to Screen" or "Full Screen." Why is this? I have always used "Actual size" for my Blu Ray discs, blu ray .mkv's, and so forth.. Now if I put in the same disc that I created the MKV with, then "Actual Size" automatically makes the movie its "actual" size which is 720x480 on these movies.. which fills up the entire screen .. I would also like to mention that these same MKV DVD files are showing up on my computer full screen with no adjustments .. Any ideas? Or do you guys all just set your Popcorn Hour in "setup/video/audio mode" to "Fit to Screen?" The main reason why I like "Actual Size" is that you aren't zooming in anything VS these other functions are zooming in .. zooming in= loss of quality.

Please explain guys... I would appreciate it greatly Smile

Your TV is a higher resolution than your files. Therefore, it shows up as a small portion of the screen size, due to it staying it's native resolution.

By choosing Full screen, the player will automatically upscale all video files to fit your screen.

It never zooms or crops, unless you set it up that way.

Hi there- Thanks for a quickly reply... Do I want to choose "Fit to Screen" or "Full Screen?" There are two different options. So there is no zooming taking place here? I just don't see how that is true, considering if I chose a file that had a 2:35 to 1 aspect ratio VS 1:85 to 1 .. The 2:35 to 1 would have black bars while the 1:85 to 1 would be technically full screen.. So if I have a 2:35 to 1 video and select "Full Screen" then it will make it full screen and quality will be lost, correct? I just don't see how 720x480 would just appear as a small little box in the size, about the size of of 4x4 square in the center of my 1080p 46" TV.. I mean its literally a very tiny box that is playing the movie.. I don't get it. When I insert the DVD, it is automatically its natural aspect ratio (either black bars or full screen) not a small little box in the center of the screen.. So what gives? Sorry for all of the questions.

I have mine set to "Fit to Screen" because it keeps the proper aspect ratio of the content I'm watching. I'd rather have black bars than stretched or zoomed content.

You won't really lose quality with this setting. With 720x480 SD content, it will still display all of those pixels, but it's also going to scale it to fit your 1920x1080 screen. If you're watching SD content on an HDTV and it's filling the screen, then that content is getting scaled at some point; when you watch it from the disc set in Actual Size mode, then I'd bet it's your TV screen that's scaling it to fit your 1080p set. Using Fit to Screen just tells the PCH to do it first before sending the data to the TV.

And there's no need to worry about Fit to Screen "zooming" your HD content since it doesn't need to scale that to fit your TV screen size, it's already the perfect size; it's only going to matter for SD content.

Awesome bro!! I tried this and you were right, on my HD content, it did not matter if I had it to "actual size" or "fit to screen." It was the same exact thing Smile And on SD content it showed up extremely well. It was the "full screen" and "crop" that I wanted to stray away from. "Fit to screen" is the setting is should be Smile Thanks so much again for all of your suggestions and awesome responses, I really appreciate it!

Hey Guys-

Need some help here... I have now created about 35 successful MKV's from some DVD's that were ripped initially with AnyDVD and DVDFAB . I am getting a error message when trying to start the MKV process : Copy complete. 0 titles saved, 1 failed . It won't even start.. It just says that and that's it. Any ideas on how to fix? I searched google and came out with a guy that had a similar issue in November and they said that the new version which is out now would fix this issue.. Any of you have the same problem? Is there a fix? It has only happened on 1 out of 35 so far .. so I tried to rip it to my hard drive with ANYDVD and it successfully ripped it.. so I'm, not sure .. what gives?

Try makeMKV on the AnyDVD rip on your HDD, make sure it is a rip that you have removed the region coding and protection and not just a 1:1 copy on your HDD.

Hey that's actually the second thing that I tried since I couldn't get the same disc to work on the actual Burnt dvd of the full movie. Any ideas?

Thanks

Sorry, I can't help you out with this one since I've never come across that issue before. I typically only use MakeMKV for my Blu-ray rips. You would probably be much better off posting this question on the MakeMKV forum: http://www.makemkv.com/forum2

Good luck!
