Wireless dongle recommendation
Hi guys...

I've read that the official Popcorn wireless dongle is a load of toss....is that true?

If so can anyone recommend a decent alternative. I want to use the dongle for youtube exclusively if that has any bearing...I have a netgear router but this may change...

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
Youtube works fine with PCH dongle.

FTP speed is around 750 to 2000kbsec (I hit 2Mbsec but I also hear way lower speeds).

Streaming video works via Dongle, but Full HD gives problems.

Alternative is to make a networkbridge with 2 Wifi Routers.

Probably, yes. Really depends on your wireless connection quality...

My home network consists of an Apple Airport Extreme 802.11N router with the PCH on an Apple Airport Express thats also on the 802.11N. I can stream full 1080p .mkv's just fine, and the airport express is only $100.

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
Using the PCH dongle I can stream YouTube if I am lucky. FTP is stable up to ~700kbps but after that it craps out after a bit.

My take is that if you want to stream you need another solution other than the dongle.

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
And mine, if you want a way to transfer files to an internal HDD then the USB dongle will do that and perhaps SD xvid and some low bitrate 720p TV. It wont do film HD or DVD.

If you are wanting wireless streaming them wireless access point or second router setup as a bridge is the best way. You are connecting via ethernet this way and not losing half your signal which you do via USB straight away. That's why wireless-N dongles are slower then wireless-g bridge etc.

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
tried both ways, I have a D-link wireless N router and Linksys with Tomato fw which I have set up as client. Transmision rate to Popcorn is about 2mbs (because of distance) which is the same as when I use the D-link dongle to D-link N router and no Bridge or Client involved

I'm sure if you searched this forum, you'd find 300 other posts of this nature...

DO NOT USE A USB DONGLE IF YOU WANT 720p/1080p STREAMING

If you really really want to do wireless streaming, your best bet is to wireless bridge two routers. USB wireless dongles don't cut it, ever.

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
What does that involve? Just plugging another wireless router into my PCH via ethernet cable?

Yes in theory, get a router that has third party firmware available and set it to operate as a bridge rather than a router.

Search the forum for more in depth details.

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
I don't want to sound like a brand whore, but none D-Link or Netgear products I've bought have had thruput capable of 1080p streaming from my computer.

I had a 802.11n wireless setup from Netgear. Turns out none of their stuff auctually supports 802.11n in the 5GHz wireless range. For me the 5GHz range makes a huge difference. I live in a crowded apartment complex and can pick up 10 or so wireless networks, but all are in the standard 2.4GHz range. So far as I've found Apple is the only company whos routers and wireless endpoints support 802.11n in the 5GHZ wireless frequency.

At this very moment I'm streaming a 1080p mkv (encoded at 9428 kbps) across my network.

RE: Wireless dongle recommendation
So do you have like two Apple Airport Extremes or something to stream your movies?

I have:
1x Apple Airport Extreme
1x Apple Airport Express

My cable modem, XBox and PCH are all plugged into the Extreme under my TV. My computer is in an another room with the Airport Express. The network is configured to run on 802.11n in the 5GHz range only. Since my AirPort Extreme is the old version this means that I don't have any 802.11b/g connectivity in my apartment (sucks for my iPhone). However, the current revision of the AirPort Extreme has dual wireless chips. It can run both a dedicated 5GHz (N) network and a 2.4GHz (B/G) at the same time.

The Airport Express adapter can either serve as a wireless router (just plug in your cable modem to it) or as a wireless extender (it hops on an existing network and extends its range) or as a wireless adapter (takes in an ethernet connection and translates it to wireless, like I'm currently doing).
In case that reads confusing:

Computer -> Cat5 -> Airport Express -> 802.11N -> Airport Extreme -> Cat5 -> PCH

As far as the Computer and PCH are concerned, they think they're on a 100Mbit LAN.
