Replace A 110 with A 300 - Can't Access NAS in 90% of the time, always receive ERR 1
Dear all,

I am new here and have not found a solution in the forum.

With my A 110 everything worked fine so no need to ask for help so far.

I replaced my A 110 with the A 300 without changing any settings anywhere, just hav run the install assistant, hoping things will go on as before just better

- USB drive attached to the A-300 runs fine
- access to my PC runs fine (incorrect: also browsing the filestructure on the PC results in error messages)
- Access to the Synology NAS is a nightmare, with almost every command done in the filebrowser I am getting an ERR 1 message.
- only browsing the attached USB drive functions

It feels to me like an access setting, but then I would not understand why navigation and starting a movie sometimes works occationally but most often not.

I could also access the A 110 from my PC but do not get access to the A300. Maybe because I had a hardrive in the A 110 and none in the A 300?

P.S: I am using Windows 7 but I thing connecting a Poppy to a NAS should be independent from anything I have,do or change on the computer.

Hope you guys are laughing now because of this Newbie problem, but please help.

Kind regards

Andi

RE: Replace A 110 with A 300 - Can't Access NAS in 90% of the time
is ERR 1 the whole and exact message that appears?

Describe your synology setup and share settings, it's probably something fixable and simple. there are synology users with smb (samba) issues when using a username and password. They either turn on guest OR switch to nfs/nfs-tcp and secure the synology restricting nfs access to only the pch.

The exact message is "An error occurred. Cannot proceed your request (ERR 1)".

Guest account is deactivated, NFS is not enabled (hopw I understood your question correctly.

There is one thing I did not mention: I immeadiately upgraded to the latest A 300 Firmware. Could there be a problem with this?

Just saw that also when I access the shared folders on the computer the error message comes sometimes (feels less than with the NAS, but probably only bcause there's a smaller tree and therefore less clicks needed)

RE: Replace A 110 with A 300-Can't Access NAS in 90% of the time, always receive
I don't understand your last part. Are you saying your computer accessing the same nas gets errors also?

So there is a known issue with samba on the newest 200 and 300s firmware when using a username and password with some nas models. Most synology units fall into this and it started with the last nas software update if I recall correctly..

There are 2 ways to make it work while you wait for syabas to fix it. the tend to be slow in this area so I recommend you do not wait for syabas.

You can enable guest on the nas. If it happens a lot to you, I would test out if your impacted by this bug by temporary enabling guest on the share and see if the error goes away.. If you don't mind guest being on, you can keep your setup this way.

You can also use NFS with your nas which can offer protection like a username and password does but nfs doesn't use username or password. What you want to do for this is enable nfs on your nas for your share. Then you want to edit the pch share setting to use nfs or nfs-tcp. Start with nfs. And then the share needs to be changed to an nfs path (I am unsure what this is for synology, should be easy to look it up in google). To protect the share, you can setup permissions in the synology so certain devices have the specific access you want. In this case you want to restrict access to only the pch and then setup your read or read/write options also.

Some people find nfs causes poor video performance and they switch to nfs-tcp. Others find the opposite. Start with nfs and switch to nfs-tcp if your unhappy with performance.

RE: Replace A 110 with A 300-Can't Access NAS in 90% of the time, always receive
Thanks for spending so much time with me. Concerning the error, what I meant was that I have challenges to access the NAS as well as the PC with my new A 300.

NAS, PC and A 110 work perfectly with each other (no issues).

I am a little hesitant to change any settings on an environment that works because of a new component (A300) that does not want to play along.

Guess as an initial step I will upload an old firmware to the A 300 as a first step. -> Will report on any findings

Update:

Status: Tried 3 previous firmwares: no resolution. A-300 does not want to let me browse through any file structure in the network without spitting error messages. Only attached USB drive functions.

Temporary solution: Put the old A-110 back online and the A-300 on the shelf. The A-110 runs again fine like an old german "Volkswagen". Not fancy but reliable.

Waiting now, deeply disappointed of Syabas for the next firmware update.

You'll be waiting for ever as like Accident says there are many Synology owners, myself included that have the A300 and a Synology NAS working fine.

Did you follow the WIKI guide for Synology owners:-
http://www.networkedmediatank.com/wiki/i..._NAS_setup

You will have to give more details on the exact settings and setup you have to be able to help you sort it out. Don't give up easily and sit back thinking someone else, i.e. Syabas/PCh will fix it.

A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI
CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407

RE: Replace A 110 with A 300 - Can't Access NAS in 90% of the time receive ERR 1
Thanks for your patience with me. I am eager to get this resolved so I started to read through this wiki, but I must admit that I am not even understanding what the objectives of the wiki is. It looks to me that it explains how to set up a NAS to be able to stream. What I did so far is accessing the files on the shared folders of the NAS and play them with the A 110. It feels to me that this is not the same as streaming. So streaming could be the next step for me when the basics work.

Is my understanding correct that accessing files on a NAS and preparing a NAS for streaming is not he same?

I am probably too old to understand what all the potential settings mean and what the consequences are when I start to change any settings as I am getting access to the files with the IPad, Iphone and A-110 as well as with the PC. I am scared to destroy anything if I am changing now NAS settings.

Not sure what additional Information you require.

I am using a devolo 500 power line network with an A 110, A 300, my Computer, all devices are connected via a central Zyxel HUB. Additionally I use a Zyxel WLAN for Ipad, and IPhone

NAS: Synology DS 1511+ / DSM 4.0
- All files are in the standard shared folders "music", "video", "photo"
- Windows file service is enabled
- the workgroup is WORKGROUP
- so far I only used an admin account (guest disabled, I turned guest on now)

Here's how it looks to me on the A300 / newest firmware

In the local files I see the following entires:
- the USB device (works)

In the Networkmedia I see the following entries:

- Networkbrowser (works)
- Discstation (-> error)
- PC: Andi (this is my computer) (-> error)

When I go through the networkbrowser I can select on the next level WORKGROUP and from there I can access and watch movies from the shared folders of the PC and of the NAS with no problem

When I directly click on Discstation I am getting the error message.

The big disadvantage is that the workgroupbrowsing only works when my Computer is turned on.

Happy to provide any additional Information you may require.

Kind regards

Andi
