Streaming .mkv FROM A-110 to Samsung TV
Hello folks!

Im currently running a popcorn in my living room, and it works great. Bought myself a new tv for the bed room, and so i turned on the UPnP feature on the A-110.

The TV finds the popcorn, and the internal media player can play most of the media on it, but not my .mkv files.

Im guessing that the tv does not support .mkv files? Its a new Samsung allshare tv.

Is there some way around this? Or is the easiest way to go and buy another PH a-110?

RE: Streaming .mkv FROM A-110 to Samsung TV
Why are you using the media player in the TV when you have an A-110 connected to it?

The Samsung will play mkv files, you can prove this by copying the file to a USB device and plugging it into the TV. It's the UPnP server that likely does not support mkv.

Hehe, looks like i made a typo! The new TV is in my bedroom - so its not connected to the PH a-110.

It did work to run .mkv from a USB Device, but it will not run it thru the UPnP. Thats what im trying to work out

Ok, now makes sense.

Where is your media stored? I'm guessing it's on an internal HDD in the A-110?

If you get another A-110 for the bedroom you should be able to enable the Samba server on the A-110 in the lounge to stream media from lounge to bedroom.

You could also try instaling Llink on the A-110 in the lounge and see if the Samsung detects it. This may support mkv with UpnP but not sure.

I also have a Samsung TV with similar capabilities but never use it's built in media player. The PCH players are far superior.

All my media is stored on my A-110. Got an internal drive, and a usb drive (with a soft link to the internal so that the UPnP works for the external drive aswell).

I will try the Llink tomorrow.

I already have an extra A-110, but i dont have ethernet in my bedroom - and the only oppertunity i have is to run it wireless, and for that i need a USB WiFi stick. And it seems like the USB WiFi means trouble when it comes to streaming .mkv files

Results will vary streaming mkv over WiFi, depends on the actual file. Over a good connection I have streamed 720p mkv over WiFi, but 1080p is a definite no. There are alternatives to ethernet such as Powerline, but again results will vary depending on your household electrical wiring.

Okey. Seems like WiFi will be a bad idea then. You dont happen to know how it works with a brdige? Im thinking of D-Link DAP-1522 Wireless N Ethernet bridge. Then you could use the 5gHz for streaming movies only, and direct all the other traffic to the 2.4gHz band?

Powerline is all new to me, never even heard of it before! And im supposed to be technical hehe. How is powerline performing? Is it better than WiFi? And is it reliable? Been googling it, but i find so many different answers.

Thanks for your responses!

RE: Streaming .mkv FROM A-110 to Samsung TV
I know this thread is a bit old. However, those who are having trouble (as I did initially) streaming MKV files for play on Samsung TVs or Blu-Ray players are advised to check out Serviio, the free Java based DLNA server. Serviio is recommended by both Samsung and Sony. The most recent version will also stream canned web video. The developer is trying to incorporate the ability to stream live web video for future versions.

My five years old Netgear router had never problems with the 720p's. After all it supported up to 2MB/s which is enough for the 720p's and not enough for the 1080p's.

The problem is with my new shiny Linksys E4200 that with the Popcorn's wireless adapter (TP-LINK) on other devices easily reaches 5MB/s (enough for 1080p streaming) but with the A-110 it is hard even to get 1MB/s and all video files stutter...

I understood that A-110 does not work well with new generation routers but I would be thankful if someone can solve the problem because the wireless streaming is important to me and I am considering changing the popcorn if I can find a player that will do the work.

the upnp server in the popcorn, then rename the mkv to avi, and my samsung plays them just fine.. Smile

why not try to convert mkv to samsung tv more friendly format like MPEG4, H.264, H.263

Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Play MKV, HD MKV on various Samsung Galaxy Phones

you will find a simple way.

in fact it also applied to play mkv on samsung tv, wait no more, just have a free try

RE: Streaming .mkv FROM A-110 to Samsung TV
Just bought a Samsung tv and I have the same problem here.
My pch c200 is connected with HDMI to my main tv, working fine with all kind of scripts I installed.
A second tv is connected to LAN and can see my mediatank but wont play (streaming) mkv files.

In a setting where torrents are downloaded and unrarred in a folder and i am informed by email when done (all automaticly). I dont want to rename or concert files to see them on a other tv that isnt connected with hdmi.

I hope we can fine a better solution so upnp protocol and allshare protocol that is running on Samsung can work together.

RE: Streaming .mkv FROM A-110 to Samsung TV
Any updates here ? Just wondering because I have the same problem on my Toshiba Regza TV. The TV is able to play .mkv from USB stick, but when streaming from PCH A-110 it fails, usually with a decoding failure message.

I have tried the PCH built-in, llink and mediatomb as UPNP streming servers and all of them fails when trying to decode the streams on the TV.

Whn renaming the .mkv to .avi everthing works fine as suggested earlier, but this is not an acceptable solution in my opinion.

Is the problem in the server och in the client you think? Anyone tested Serviio ?

Please advice.

RE: Streaming .mkv FROM A-110 to Samsung TV
I have C200, tried to stream .mkvs or any media files through built-in unpn server, it could stream to Samsung TV with builtin WiFi. After 20-30 minutes it crashes with message "Device disconnected". Streaming through Llink says "not supported file format".

I wonder how could you succeed in playing avi files?

I agree that renaming the file is not feasible. I have experiencing the same issue as others. I have an a-110 as well and I think the issue is the my Samsung tv is expecting to file type/mime format to be: video/x-mkv instead of what is currently being provided by the a-110: video/x-matroska.

I have some to this assumption because I installed another media server on my PC and served up the same mkv file and the info button on my tv reported it was video/x-mkv and the pause, fast fowarding, and time seek functions worked as expected.
