So I found when I reniced the transmission-demon processes:

(good) transmissions played nice and didn't crash

(bad) transmission didn't progress *at all* when verifying data

Do you have any idea what the default "nice" value is? I don't see that available via ps or top as I see on other UNIX systems I've dealt with. Usually I think on most UNIXes it is 0.

I initially reniced to 10 (lower priority == higher number), and the verifying didn't progress even after hours of trying... but even after I reniced to 5, then 0, then -5, then -18, still nothing... weird.

This is all (plus terrible SMB/NFS lockups/delays frequently) leads me to think there is a serious I/O problem on the PCH, at least mine.
