Automatic Acoustic Management setting changer
Hi,

I compiled hdparm utility for NMT and created user friendly interface to change Automatic Acoustic Management setting for internal HDD.

QUIET and FAST setting can be chosen.

By default most HDDs have FAST setting, which is noisy and not needed for NMT.

It works great for my 1TB WD hard disk. It runs much quietly now.

Download it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/168869317/acoustic.zip

NOTE: Seagate drives do not support Automatic Acoustic Management feature.

Usage:
1. Unpack archive contents to USB stick.
2. Plug USB stick into NMT.
3. Open USB stick on your NMT.
4. Click the 4th icon, on the far right. This is the web page selector.
5. Select acoustic.html
6. Select Run from XXXX, where XXXXX is the drive you chose in step 3.
7. Enjoy!

The setting will remain after power cycle of the device.

This is great! Can you please put the code on Source-Forge or Google-Code or something so we can all share this properly?

I feel a bit uneasy running binary code from a completely unknown source and I can't wait to try this out...

hdparm utility is open source. Get its sources here:

Other 2 files are in sources Smile

RE: Automatic Acoustic Management setting changer
Thanks Jusid,
I've just finished to try it out and it works perfectly. I own an old and very noisy WD drive, and when I set the tool to "quiet" mode I can't hear my HD scratching anymore. Very effective and simple, this tool should be incorporated on PCH setup page.

RE: Automatic Acoustic Management setting changer
I downloaded and installed properly the app however, when i run i see "/DEV/HDA: ACOUSTIC: NOT SUPORTED".

I suppose that my seagate hard disk is not compatible with hdpharm.

I found that info, i don't know if it's correct or not, but explains why we can't use the program with seagate drives:

"Oh...my....G....

The chap from Seagate just answered my questions [1]..., I can't believe
it. My English is not that good but if I understand well

1) Acoustic Management is patented and Seagate is having problems with
the patent holder.

2) They will indeed from now on stop manufacturing ANY drive with the
acoustic management feature.

3) They will even rework all their current datasheets, to remove all
mentions of acoustic management, slow seek acoustic figures and access
times etc.

Hopefully the patent holder will play it nice and let, hopefully, at
least one of the major drive manufacturers to use acoustic management on
their drives. But maybe this is the end of quiet
seeks... :o(((((((((((((

[1] Seagate's reply:

Hello Vincent,

Seagate doesn't manufacture drives with this mode anymore.

Seagate has decided that it will no longer support AAM (Automatic Acoustic
Management). Seagate is in the process of removing all product
information pertaining to the support of AAM.

Our drives are extremely quiet while operating at the highest performance
levels, so we believe the ability to switch between modes is unnecessary.

We are also involved in patent litigation with Convolve and MIT. Although
we believe the lawsuit is without merit, Convolve alleges
that one of its patents, US Patent No. 6,314,473, covers AAM technology.

We understand that Convolve told the T-13 standards committee that it
would license its patents on a reasonable, non-discriminatory basis.

The link works, it's just that you (or the people using the same IP address as you) have downloaded too much on RapidShare.

Wait a bit (the remaining is displayed on RapidShare) and then try again.

You are right! I did it with my GSM card and worked fine.
I have a WD 500GB green, later I will give you a feedback!
