[Sound] No Audio in Creative Vado HD files
I couldn't find this anywhere else but when I attempt to play my avi files recorded with my new Creative Vado HD on the popcorn hour I get no sound. If I hit info there is nothing listed as audio. These files play fine on my computer. I have the latest firmware installed, so I'm not sure what else to do.

Under Audio in the file properties on my computer is says Bitrate 177.

Any help?

Run one of these files through Mediainfo or AVInaptic to get a more complete report of what codecs and settings are used by the audio contained.

Here's the mediainfo rundown of the audio in the file:

176.4 KBPS, 44.1 KHz, 1 Channel, ADPCM.

Does that help?

RE: [Sound] No Audio in Creative Vado HD files
ADPCM is not PCM, and I'm not sure they are compatible.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:Digitization as part of the PCM process
In conventional PCM, the analog signal may be processed (e.g. by amplitude compression) before being digitized. Once the signal is digitized, the PCM signal is usually subjected to further processing (e.g. digital data compression).

Some forms of PCM combine signal processing with coding. Older versions of these systems applied the processing in the analog domain as part of the A/D process; newer implementations do so in the digital domain. These simple techniques have been largely rendered obsolete by modern transform-based audio compression techniques.

DPCM encodes the PCM values as differences between the current and the predicted value. An algorithm predicts the next sample based on the previous samples, and the encoder stores only the difference between this prediction and the actual value. If the prediction is reasonable, fewer bits can be used to represent the same information. For audio, this type of encoding reduces the number of bits required per sample by about 25% compared to PCM.

Adaptive DPCM (ADPCM) is a variant of DPCM that varies the size of the quantization step, to allow further reduction of the required bandwidth for a given signal-to-noise ratio.

I assume you'd have to convert ADPCM to a supported format. Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in with a little experience and wisdom.

Thanks for the info.

Is there somewhere I need to post this info so that it will get included in a future firmware update?

I'm not very familiar with converting just the sound in an AVI file, and really am not looking forward to converting every home video we take.

Any more help?

RE: [Sound] No Audio in Creative Vado HD files
ADPCM are not supported by the Sigma decoder on the NMT and it will not likely be updated to support it.

Sound in an .avi can quickly and easily be converted using Virtualdubmod, using directcopy for video and only converting audio to a supported format.

For more help - please post a full media info report
