How you access an Airport Extreme USB Hard Drive on the PCH
I recently bought an Apple Airport Extreme with the sole intention of attaching a 1TB USB drive to it and streaming video direct (via network cables) to the Popcorn without any need to have a computer switched on. I struggled to get this to work so turned to these forums for help - but seemed to find other people having problems with this as well. Now that I've figured it out for myself, I thought I'd explain how to do it to help others.

Apologies if this is obvious to some - consider this is a guide for people like myself.

I'll assume you already have a working shared drive on your Airport extreme that other computers on the network can access. (* if not, then I've put a quick guide on how to share your drive at the end).

i) You'll need to know your Airport Extreme disk username and password. This isn't your WiFi WPA key - you need the password you use to gain access to the disk on your Airport extreme, it is set in the Airport Utility program. I've set my disk password to be the same as the Airport extreme password. So in my case it's
User Name: myairport
Password: pass123

ii) Very important.....Your Hard Drive needs to have a name with No Spaces in it - mine is called buffalo1tb

iii) Get your Airport Extreme's IP address. If you don't know what it is, go into the Airport Utility program and write it down. The IP is address shown on the right panel - mine is 10.0.1.1

You now have all the information you need to set it up.

On your Popcorn go to

Setup

Network Share

Click Add rather than browse

Enter the information you have collected, in my case it's

URL smb://10.0.1.1/buffalo1tb
User Name myairport
Password pass123

SAVE

Go to Home > Media Source and your drive should show up there.

* How to set up a shared Hard Drive through your Airport Extreme
Here's how I did mine....

My Airport is set up in the Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network

My USB hard drive is formatted as: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

Attach your Hard Drive to the USB port on the Airport Extreme and power the drive up.

On your airport utility go to the Disks tab in the File Sharing pane
- mine is set up as follows from top to bottom

Enable file sharing: check
Secure shared disks: With Airport extreme password
Airport Disks Guest Access: Read and write
Share disks over Ethernet WAN port : Check
Advertise disks globally using Bonjour: Blank
Workgroup Blank
WINS Server: Blank

Save & allow it to reboot

That's it, your disk is shared.

One little thing ; I always logon to my external disk using the guest login. It won't let me login with username and pasword. Or is this fixed nowadays?

I log in with my normal username and password - I don't know if this is a recent improvement but its always worked for me - but I got my Airport after I'd already done a couple of PCH firmware upgrades - so can't comment on compatibility between the two on earlier firmware.

RE: How you access an Airport Extreme USB Hard Drive on the PCH
I get...

"The share folder no longer exist." (that's not my bad grammar btw!)

"Press [return] key to return to the previous screen"

Using exact same settings you have listed on C-200. It's nothing to do with a bad username or password. cos if i change either, I get an error telling me either is incorrect. Disk works fine on our network connecting to Macs & Windows PC's

It's an Iomega 500mb external USB formatted to FAT32.

RE: How you access an Airport Extreme USB Hard Drive on the PCH
I'm at a bit of a loss. I assume you've rebooted the router - I used to get this message and it would clear if I restarted the router.

I haven't had the same problems since buying a new Airport Extreme a couple of months ago (the old one's power supply failed).

You haven't got an HFS+ formatted drive that you could try out have you.

Like I said - I'm grasping at straws here - it should work unless they've changed something in the C-200.
