the official specsheet of the PH very clearly state up to L4.1 for H264

How difficult is it to read the specsheet of a product before buying it ?

And we have had this discussion so many times now - encoding in L5.1 is just nonsense and poor judgement of the content creators. You cannot blame a hardware device for the stupidity of those creating illegal rips without thinking or with low knowledge of what they are doing.

L5.1 is not designed to be used for consumer products or content that are only 720p/1080p with low bitrates - not even BluRay, HD-DVD or HDTV use L5.1 they are all restricted to L4.1 also. In fact the Sigma chip used in the PH are the same as are used in most BluRay players - and it will play raw BluRay or HDDVD material perfectly well. Its nonsense to create rips with lower specs than the original material using settings with much higher demands.

L5.1 are to be used only for mastering content having a resolution of 4096x2048 with bitrates up to 960mbit/s - not for puny consumer hdrips in 720p/1080p using below 20mbit/s bitrate

Heres some info on H264 profiles/levels

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264

ok thanks for this info.

it seems now to be more scene standard to do l4.1 encoding, but i guess a lot of older stuff isn't. no idea why they all did higher then l4.1 other then they though they were improving the quality somehow.

It doesnt do anything for quality at all when the content are of such low specs - the encoding to L5.1 from the scene was propably due to several things

1. hardwaredevices where not around when rips started to become available - thus they were only tested on computers using softwaredecoding which decodes anything.

2. many encoding tools defaulted to L5.1 so if you werent aware and changed it you would end up with L5.1 encodes.

3. it was "new ground" - all beginning is difficult and finding common standards takes a litle time - just like optimizing a new device like the PH takes a litle time.

But it seems that some of the better scene groups now are getting a better understanding of this and are releasing more in L4.1 than in L5.1
