HDX-1000 - VOB or ISO best for DVD Playback from a NAS?
Hi - I've recently ordered an HDX-1000 and whilst waiting for it am going to rip my DVD collection to my QNAP TS-109 II NAS box, which runs the TwonkyMedia server (I'm not going to install a disc in the HDX-1000) . I want to rip the main feature from all my DVDs with no loss in quality, so will rip either to folders of VOBs or an ISO image - which would be best for use with the HDX-1000? Ideally I want to stream the movies to the HDX-1000 using TwonkyMedia, rather than having to go the NFS/SMB route - is both ISO and VOB playback on the HDX-1000 via streaming from TwonkyMedia supported? Thanks

Twonky is a http streaming app. Until recent times it would not recognise MKV files but I believe it does now.
It wont do ISO files though as you do need SMB or NFS for those.

You could use makeMKV which keeps the original mpeg streams but puts them into an MKV. These would show up via Twonky aqnd give main movie playback, no DVD menu.

Can HDX-1000 playback movies streamed from TwonkyMedia on my NAS?
Hi - does anyone know if the HDX-1000 can playback movies streamed from TwonkyMedia running on a QNAP TS-109 Pro II NAS? To clarify I don't want to run TwonkyMedia on the HDX-1000, just use it to playback content streamed from the NAS. If so, can I stream a TS_VIDEO directory full of VOBs to the HDX-1000 for playback? Thanks

So just to clarify - if I convert my DVD rips to MKV will there be *no* loss in quality - i.e. no change of video/audo codec etc.? Am not bothered about DVD menus, though subtitles for foreign films would be good - can you do this with MKV? Thanls

No need for two threads ive merged them.

makeMKV will keep the original streams - no transcoding etc.

It is free so get it and try it:-
http://www.makemkv.com/

You can add a subtitle track to the MKV or just add a sutitle file of format .srt to the folder where the MKV is stored.

Twonky will play vobs but wont give menu etc it will just play the vobs one after the other. The Twonky website/forum will be able to advise further.

Okay sounds good. I can't run MakeMKV natively on my intel Mac, though. However think you can do much the same in other tools, such as google's Media Converter, but also some more basic feeebie tools I think. Think will see how using MKV files works out...

As I mentioned I have a Mac, so can't use MakeMKV natively, so I 've been trying to convert VOBs to MKV using google's Media Converter, however there doesn't seem to be a "no transcoding" option or an "MPEG2" option - I have to convert to H.264 or Xvid, which I don't really want to do. Or have I missed the point here?

I'll have a look at some other Mac MKV apps to see if these are any different

Is there not a MAC app that will just join vobs, that would work aswell.

You can extract the main feature of a DVD to a single VOB using Mactheripper, but I'm not so sure how to join VOBs of the existing TS_VIDEO folders for the movies that I've previously ripped. I'm sure its possible, just not sure how!
