RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
I don't mess with subs, but I'm fairly certain that mkvmerge GUI can handle it.

Do a google search for mkvtoolnix, when opening the application, just add your mkv file and srt file and then remux it. Takes a few mins and then you'll have a mkv file with embedded subtitles.

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
my subtitles files have an extension of .sub
mkvtoolnix does not pick this up automaticly, only .srt files.

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
Just place .srt file (download it form internet) and give it the same name as .mkv (except the extension of course)

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
SRT is the most common format for subtitles, altough other formats (for example SSA) add more options for the subtitle (like temporary change of position / color of the subtitle).

However, SRT is a very good format!

There is a subtitle converter available (SubConv) in case you have ripped the subs yourself and there are no srt's available for your movie.

Mkvtoolnix not support .sup files, but it support idx/sub, that is the most similar thing in functionality to .sup files.

The next firmware will not support yet idx/sub, but let's hope that the following one yes.

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
I have a HD MKV (720p) and I want to add the subtitle file (SRT) to it, without losing quality
so does mkvtoolnix change the audio/video if I just add subs?

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
No MKVMerge is what you use. MKVToolNix comes with MKVMerge and MKVExtract. For some reason MKVMerge comes with a GUI and MKVExtract does not. You can find a GUI for Extract via Google easily enough.

Anyway open MKVMerge and add your video/audio file. Click to add your subtitle stream. Then it remuxes so no encoding involved.

MKV was fairly new to me but I have found that out of all the containers it is the easiest to work with.

A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI
CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407

lol
I got it working, thanks though
but it only seemed to be one GUI that would handle all three (I think, I was tired at the time)

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
I downloaded an .mkv file with no separate .srt subtitle files showing. VLC (for Mac) shows an English subtitle track is available from the menu, but it doesn't seem to work. I went to opensubtitles website and downloaded an .srt file, then renamed it to match my .mkv file (except for the extension, of course).

When I move the file into the same folder as the .mkv file, then go back to VLC and open the .srt file, the subtitles still don't show. I can see that a new subtitle track is available from the menu (which isn't listed as an English track, it just says "Track 2"), but none of the selected subtitle tracks work.

From what I've read on this thread and other similar threads on the internet, the above methods should work, but they don't. Did I miss something with renaming or adding the .srt file? Is the file bad, and should I download a different one? Because I use a Mac, do I need to do something different compared to Windows or Linux users?

P.S. - I'm using VLC 1.0.1 for Mac, if that helps.

P.P.S. - I just checked the file in TextEdit, and I can read them fine - each line is numbered individually, with timecodes showing when the subtitle starts and ends. I guess the file is ok, so what else could be wrong?

RE: adding subtitle to .MKV
in VLC, you have to go to Video > Subtitle Tracks > Load File....
it doesn't pick them up automatically (I think)

I did that - the new track will show up in Subtitle Tracks after I open it, but it doesn't give subtitles.
