Will this work?
This device:
http://www.sharkoon.com/html/produkte/ex...ex_en.html Connected to my pc running nfs, share the usb drive in nfs and stream the movies through my lan to the pch. Seems an ideal solution for me, i can store my HD movies on relatively cheap 750gb hd's and swap them easily. I prefer connecting to pc over the pch cause of the noise. Will it work? ps. will do some test with shared usb stick and see if that works. |

tecnically it will work... but having so much "inter" connection... will it cause any bottleneck for high bitrate movies?
just a thought... cheers Join our facebook page today! http://www.facebook.com/networkedmediajukebox |

Tested with usb stick, the higher bitrate mkv suffered indeed from stutter-o-rama. When playing the same clip direct from pc's HD no stutter-i-do. Gonna take a external usb hd from work and test with that one. |

Flash3d Wrote:Connected to my pc running nfs, share the usb drive in nfs and stream the movies through my lan to the pch. I have 2x500gb external USB HD's connected to my PC server and stream high bitrate media from these to the PH via MyIhome running on this PC server - works PERFECTLY HTTP streaming gives the best possible performance. I highly reccomend using MyIhome HTTP server over NFS sharing unless you specifically need dvd-iso playback. Simply fire up MyIhome on your pc and add any folders to the watchlist to manage all your mediafiles, regardles if these folders are located on external USB drives or internal harddrives or even networkshares from other computers in your network. Advantages are amongst others: Only 1 place to controll the mediafiles, no need to setup shares on your pc, just add folders to MyIhomes watchlist. No need to mount shares in the PH giving multiple sourcelist with poor overview of your files - you only have one source - MyIhome - and when accessing this you can access and search all the media "managed" by MyIhome. Best possible streaming performance. |

It will
I am using exactly this drive-bay. One is attached to my Mac, the other one is connected to the PCH. Formatting was OSX extended and it does it´s job perfectly. So there is no need for samba or NFS.

I am going to buy either 2xsharkoon quickport or 2xraidsonic mb-664 trayless enclosure for usb hdd usage.
I just need to figure out what is better of those 2..

There is a massive difference between the throuput of a flash based USB stick and HDD based USB drive.
You can't "test" with a USB stick for throughput just doesn't make sense. |
