What is the best external PC RAID drive enclosure
I need more storage and would like to hand a 4 or 5 drive bay Raid enclosure off of my PC either by USB or firewire. Obviously it will be used as storage for streaming content to my PCH.

Whats the best in terms of:

Reliability

Cost

Speed

auto on/off control from the PC

Drive capacity

Thanks

You'd better start looking for a NAS.

RAID enclosure used as an USB drive is...erm...not a smart idea Smile

I don't know what or how bad the performance would be, but I have used ICY Dock as a solution. Here is one of their products MB561US-4S. I currently use 2 of their MB453sPF-B in a white box configuration where they are part of my FREENAS configuration. It currently has 6 TB of space but carved out for NFS and SAMBA shares.

can I be so bold as to ask "why not"???

I currently am using 2 single drive USB enclosures hanging off my PC with no problems per se.

check out this company's products

Edgestore

I'm more than happy with their DAS200 unit and use it + 2 x 1Tb drives connected to my NAS via usb to stream content with no problems at all. They also do 4 and 5 bay models.

Storage: HP N40L microserver (8Tb) & 2 x Edgestor DAS200 (8Tb)
Display: Sony Bravia KDL55HX853

Sorry, my comment was not intended to have any insulting meaning...

Apart from a NAS (actually two - one Raidsonic and one that I assembled myself) I am also using a couple of external disks for storage, but a NAS is much more than a storage.

I am yet to see a RAID enclosure without network connection (yes, I know they do exist). What is the point to use the NAS as an USB disk? A NAS is much more flexible and configurable than a simple USB disk.

All NAS-es I have tested come with FTP, samba, NFS, user/group management, access right management and other enhancements over a dummy USB crate.

A NAS is not limited to a couple of meters away from the computer and can be accessed by all users/computers at home and even over the internet. You can stream content out of the NAS directly to your PCH without the need of a computer.

So, believe me, you don't need a RAID USB disk, you need a NAS. For the same price Smile

Tuogi,

no insult taken. I really just want to learn and understand. I live a hectic life, traveling alot with work, so I am looking for something quick that will work. I know a USB external drive will work.

I have my new PCH working under basic mode. ie it sees my files on my PC and external drives and I can stream music and videos.

If I could find a NAS that is easy to set up and will work with the PCH without problems I would go that route. However, most of the NAS units I have seem on Newegg, etc seem to be priced a lot higher than a USB external drive

Sans Digital makes some USB externals that are reasonably priced.

http://store.sansdigital-shop.com/towerraid.html

The street prices are even less for these.

No matter what I add, I would like to have at least 4 drive bays to make it worth my while since I have lots of movies in HD and albums from about 10 years of downloading.

If you or anyone else has good suggestions for a reasonably priced NAS that works, please help me out.

I appreciate it.

Toshu

I have a ReadyNas it's very expensive, but it does more than you're basic Nas.
Go here to see the details about the one I have: ReadyNas NV+

Thanks for the info.

You are right, it is very expensive.

I could build a PC based server for that money, maybe even less using a case and power supply that I have, but I judt do not have the time to do that now.

RE: What is the best external PC RAID drive enclosure
I got 8 USB drives attached to the PCH that acts like a NAS for the rest of my network. Works OK for viewing HD content on other systems then the PCH only limitation is 1 HD or 2 SD movies at the time as the bandwidth coming from the PCH aint to great.

yes it's a 'cheap' solution.......but then again I'm Dutch

PCH-A100/A210/C200/A400 500GB EXT3 HDD<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10 + 6 Bowers & Wilkins speakers.
10 NTFS 2TB USB drives on 3 hubs attached to the A400, 2 Seagate blackarmour NAS 3TB, 2 Seagate Central NAS 4TB.

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box...

Hmmm...

I was told/read that you could NOT see a USB external drive that is connected directly to the PCH by your PC........I also would want to be able to store/move files from my PC to those external USB drives....

How is that done....what would I need to do??

I know the Dutch. Have been to Breda over a dozen times and the folks are frugal and Great!!

Well, you have found the correct answer. The best NAS is that you build yourself.

I have tested several, and finally put an old Win XP computer on the job. Two internal disks in RAID, two external USB drives and voila! The speed is much higher than any (advertized as) Gbit portable NAS, easy remote access (either via the build-in Windows capabilities or through some third party utility), scalable, configurable and most importantly you do not rely on any producer to update the firmware or solve a problem.

From the rest, the best I have seen are Buffalo Link/Tera Station.

Toshu

format the USB drives in EXT3 that is native to the LINUX OS of the PCH.
activate PCH SMS service.
in XP make a permanent Network drive from all the PCH attached USB drives.
windows explorer-->tools-->map networkdrive-->\\Pch-a100\USB_DRIVE_A-1-->login as nmt-->password 1234--> reconnect at startup.
same for \\Pch-a100\USB_DRIVE_B-1 and \\Pch-a100\USB_DRIVE_C-1 ect...

done
