PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
This is the new official support thread for my PopCorn MKV AudioConverter (the previous one was getting too big, and since I wasn't the thread starter, I couldn't update the first post to reflect the newest version released, so I decided to make a new thread).

Current version is: v1.81
Release Date: 06 Feb 2010
Download Link: Compressed .EXE, Compressed .ZIP.

Due to the many anti-virus programs not working properly and reporting the compressed .EXE file as various viruses or trojans, I have decided to release an uncompressed version of the program as well. This, however, doesn't support auto-updating, so try the compressed .EXE first and use that one if your anti-virus software is properly coded.

There is a short tutorial online on how to use the program.

The latest additions to the program are as follows:
  1. v1.81
    • Volume Normalization of a converted DTS-to-AC3 track is now possible for better playback on those TVs that have a bad dowmix from 6ch to 2ch
  2. v1.80
    • Volume Adjustment to individual channels in 6ch DTS-to-AC3 conversion is now possible.
  3. v1.79.5
    • Download external utilities now possible in both .ZIP and .EXE editions, thanks to user AdelphiA putting up server space and bandwidth.
    • FLAC conversion could result in "Required file 2.ac3 missing" if a too old version of eac3to was found and used (the old version returned without setting an Error Level, so AudioConverter thought the conversion went fine until it discovered that the expected output file didn't exist). AudioConverter now tests for the version of eac3to in this case and refuses to run with anything less than v3.15 (the version in the tools package) if converting from FLAC to AC3/DTS.
  4. v1.79.3
    • Convert FrameRate fix (now takes decoder library from the DTS decoding tab)
    • Convert FrameRate now allows 640kbit to be used for 5.1-channel DTS-to-AC3 conversion
  5. v1.79.2
    • Post Events maintenance release
  6. v1.79.1
    • Post Events (Job/Batch) now available. Can run any file or play any sound file at the end of each job and/or at the end of a batch run.
    • Exception Handling improved to catch errors encountered in MediaInfo.
    • eac3to couldn't be specified if only AAC 5.1 conversion was enabled.
  7. v1.79.0
    • Long-time elusive bug that could cause AudioConverter to hang in an infinite loop upon startup has now (hopefully Smile) been squashed, thanks to the investigation by forum user boddy.
  8. v1.78.5
    • Convert FrameRate should now work with multi-channel OGG audio tracks and with ASS subtitles as well (Untested - don't have a file to test either of these with)
  9. v1.78.4
    • Convert FrameRate can now convert DTS tracks directly to AC3 (or preserve it as DTS if you have purchased Surcode DTS Encoder) while adjusting framerate.
    • Convert FrameRate can now convert OGG tracks as well, either to AC3 or preserve it as OGG (if you have the OGG Encoder in the same directory as you have the OGG Decoder).
  10. v1.78.3
    • Test version to try and fix the problem described in Post #334.
  11. v1.78.2
    • OGG/VORBIS MultiChannel can now be converted to AC3 MultiChannel via the VORBIS tab. Only 6-channel (5.1) OGG/VORBIS audio tracks can be converted (as well as Stereo/Mono OGG). If someone has a multi-channel-but-not-5.1-OGG-soundtrack please PM me so that I can try to make conversion for this as well.
  12. v1.78.1
    • Unattended mode now has the command line: AudioConverter RUN <SourceDir> <TargetDir> [<DoneDir>] [/DTS-] [/OGG-] [/ACC-] [/VERIFY-] [/ANIMATE-]:
<DoneDir> specifies a directory to which the converted files (the originals) are moved after being converted. If on the same drive they are simply moved. If on a different drive, the file is first copied, and if the operating system says "yes, it was copied", then the copy is verified to be identical to the original before the original is deleted. If any detectable errors (such as "Out of disk space", "Drive not ready", "Read error", etc.) occurs during the copying, the whole program halts with an error message.
/VERIFY- disables this additional verification step and the source file is simply deleted after being copied to the <DoneDir>.
/ANIMATE- disables mouse animations during AutoRun
  13. v1.78.0
    • Unattended mode can now be run from command line: AudioConverter RUN <SourceDir> <TargetDir> [/DTS-] [/OGG-] [/ACC-]. See Post #313 for details.
  14. v1.77.2
    • Conversion of FLAC audio can now selectively be turned on/off for Mono/Stereo and Multi-Channel FLAC sources.
    • Conversion of FLAC audio with 3-5 channels are not possible with eac3to, so these tracks are ignored.
  15. v1.77.1
    • FLAC audio can now be converted to DTS as well as AC3 (provided you have a compatible DTS encoder installed that eac3to can use!)
    • Browsing for eac3to was not possible if FLAC conversion was enabled, but DTS conversion was disabled.
  16. v1.77.0
    • FLAC audio can now be converted to AC3 - both stereo and multi-channel.
    • When selecting a source file, the target file is now updated accordingly, preserving the target directory.
  17. v1.76.4
    • V_MPEG2 now added to recognized video encodings
  18. v1.76.3
    • Better visual feedback of problems in Re-sample and Convert FrameRate
  19. v1.76.2
    • BitRate list in Re-sample AC3 Audio Tracks could become empty - now fixed.
  20. v1.76.1
    • Double-double-quoting file names - now fixed.
  21. v1.76.0
    • Now handles non-6ch DTS tracks as well via an intermediary .WAV file and by using Aften encoder
  22. v1.75.5
    • AVI-Mux GUI produced .MKV files incompatible with AudioConverter - This has now been fixed
  23. v1.75.4
    • VORBIS tab sheet now visible by default - All tab sheets can be disabled using /DTS-, /OGG- or /AAC-, respectively, on the command line.
    • Program now flashes an error message trying to explain why it won't allow you to run the conversion
  24. v1.75.3
    • Now properly handles 23.976fps-to-25fps conversions - Rounding error fixed.
  25. v1.75.2
    • Now handles S_HDMV/PGS subtitle tracks (no processing is done - they are simply copied over to the new file).
  26. v1.75.1
    • Now detects (and rejects) non-6ch DTS tracks (since eac3to can't handle them)
    • Now detects even more invalid characters in file names/paths and warns about them
    • Started incorporating the "Set DTS track as default track", but haven't finished it yet (it requires a major rewrite of the code that generates the command line to MKVMerge)
    • Removed the options to convert OGG/VORBIS tracks (can for a limited time be re-enabled using /OGG command line switch)
  27. v1.75.0
    • File->Re-sample AC3 audio tracks
Allows re-sampling of AC3 audio tracks to a lower (or higher Smile) bitrate for use on devices that can't handle 640kbit AC3 audio streams as used on BluRay.
    • Support for intermediate .WAV files > 4 Gb
      (-readtoeof switch in Aften)
IMPORTANT NOTICE: There is a fault in the external utility BeSweet when decoding .MP3 files to .WAV for Re-Sampling audio tracks, which decodes it to pure noise. Make sure you are using v1.5b31 or later and make sure to test the file afterwards before letting the application loose on a bunch of files.

Show your appreciation of this software.

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
Hi there, first of all I want to say thank you - you're program is awesome and I can see that there is no way I would have bothered to figure out how to convert an mkv dts track to dolby digital using so many different programs, so to have it all done via one interface is great.

Although your program is for popcorn hour, I use it with my Western Digital WDHDTV, which can output DTS, unlike the PH (from what I've read). However, when I take it to a friend's house and they don't have a multichannel surround sound setup (lazy of them I know!), I get no sound over HDMI, whereas it will output DD 5.1 and downmix it if necessary so that most tvs will play the sound ok. Hence the use for your program - to provide a DD soundtrack from a DTS one as many mkvs only come with DTS. Anyway, now that I've explained, my 3 points are...

1) When I select 'preserve DTS track', the new Dolby Digital track is fine but the original DTS track, which was previously fine, starts to 'stutter' i.e. every few moments it seems to cut out momentarily. Has anyone else mentioned this? Is it a bug? Can it be fixed?

2) I understand the programs main use, and why most users would want dolby digital to become the new default soundtrack, but, as you can see from my setup, DTS would still be my main default track preference after conversion. Could you add a radio button or something in the settings that enables this option? (even if not on by default)

3) General questions - have read your tutorial but with your latest update there are options for "Clean up DTS track before re-encode" and "Re-sample low-sample-rate audio tracks". Could you provide a quick explanation of what these do and whether they are generally desirable to have on or not please?

May sound like I'm whinging but I love to software and appreciate the effort you've put it... Cheers! Smile

I haven't heard of this particular scenario before, but you may be able to fix it by enabling the "Always" option in the "Cleanup DTS track before re-encode" area.

I would rather not introduce options to the main program that will only be used/useful for a very limited number of people - especially when it is so simple afterwards to do it yourself using the MKV tools (see Chris' reply). I'll think about it, but don't hold your breath...

"Clean up DTS track" is used to - try - to eliminate the stuttering of DTS tracks. Generally, it is used on tracks that are already stuttering before conversion, but it can also be used to try to eliminate it for tracks that stutter afterwards (although, as I have said, I have never heard of that type of scenario). Generally, I would set it at "Only if requested", as this will then only kick when the external tools request that such a pass be done. Then - for the files that produce stuttering DTS playback - try to set it to always for that conversion to see if it fixes the problem.

"Re-sample low-sample-rate audio tracks" are used to make sure that audio tracks' sample rate (the Hz) are within the range that can be "legally" transmitted over digital links. The HDMI interface officially only supports sample rates of 32 KHz and up, so if you encounter a file with a sample rate of 24 KHz and try to send the digital data over the HDMI cable, you cannot be sure that the receiving end will understand the data that comes. Generally, I would leave that on, as it only kicks in when it encounters a low-sample-rate audio track, which there aren't many of.

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
Hi there, first of all sorry for my bad english.

I have a big Problem. I want to recode a DTS in a AC3 mkv file for my WD HD TV (ok, its NOT a PopCorn Hout but i hope you will help me anyway Wink )

I did everything that is explained here:

http://audioconverter.heartware.dk/Tutorial/

but then, i click the run button and only this appears:

G:\>"C:\Program Files (x86)\MKVtoolnix\mkvinfo.exe" F:\Filme\HD\sample.mkv >E:\TEMPFI~1\TEMP\MKVINFO.OUT

Video Track:
Non-existing!

I do not know what to do? Its a normal .mkv File with DTS Codec and Video.

Can u help me? ( i searched, but i did not find anything)

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
Use an English-language MKVInfo.

Since AudioConverter parses the output from MKVInfo, it is coded to recognize the output in English - not in German.

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
I have a number of Micro hd files (MKV) with only AAC 6 channel sound that I can't hear with my setup, will this tool let me convert that to 6channel AC3?

Running WDTV player, audio through receiver (I think it's possibly the receiver that can't recognize the AAC).

I'd appreciate simple instructions as I'm pretty new at this, thanks!

Thanks for the reply HeartWare - will definitely give these things a try!

It should (at least that's what it is also designed for Big Grin).

Read the Tutorial and pay special notice to the part describing AAC audio conversion options.

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
I'm trying to convert DTS audio track from an H264 mkv to AC3 but fail every time.

It does the first two tasks susseccfully
(demuxing tracks and extracting time codes for audio tracks for proper handling of audio delay),

Then it claims to be converting and remux'ing (it doesn't even take a second to complete these 2 tasks) and of course there is no output file ...

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Progress log is as follows:

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
A wild guess: The output file name has ".AC3" in it - don't know if some of the external program I use has problems with this.

Otherwise, the only suggestion I have is to look at the temporary directory for a file SPAWN.BAT that is used to execute the external programs. It may be a bit tricky if the applications abort immediately, but the output from this file would be of great help in figuring out why it fails. The programs themselves returns with no error level, otherwise AudioConverter would have picked up on it.

RE: PopCorn MKV AudioConverter
Thanks for your reply.
I will try to check out the batch file.

EDIT:
Thanks for the clue, I managed to track down the problem.
I had an ampersand (&) in one of my dir names under which the tool bundle lies, the batch file didn't like that kind of a path.
