My Country, the UK, has decided to recently to lower VAT from 17.5% to 15% and increase limits on Duty free or postal ground services BUT remember that you have NOT paid for a postal service in any case. You have paid for a courier not a countries postal service to deliver. That courier will pay your fees but expect them returned along with a minimum admin fee.

Quote:The problem I find, is many companies have a contract with a certain shipper and won't use any other method. eg. PCH is a prime example.
Firstly you talk about about Postal Services but then mention 'shippers' which are courier services and not postal services.

PCH is NOT a prime example by any means. PCH have changed suppliers for many countries based on feedback from customers. There is a thread where they asked for your experiences/feedback so they could tailor the service that is best for each members country.

I'm using my country because I know it best. I also know the US system pretty good because I buy a lot of items from the USA.

Please don't take my comments as directed fully at PCH. I used them as an example because most here are familiar with their system. I could just as well have used Garmin who will only ship via UPS. Actually, I could make up lists of companies that will only offer one method of shipping. I also understand it is easier for the company and cheaper (they get discounts when they sign into a contract with a courier).

What I was trying to get across is, it would be nice if companies (not just PCH) offered more then just one shipping method. Probably a courier and the postal system.

Some will always go for the courier because it is usually faster but the postal system is usually cheaper but normally slower.

I'm not being defensive just trying to correct a few misunderstandings.

PCH have used the USPS before to ship. They got nothing but complaints from USA customers about USPS and so changed to offer a courier service.

There is another option, don't buy direct buy from a supplier in your own country then you avoid and VAT or import duties as the importing company will have paid them.

You keep going back, to it being one service or the other. I'm suggesting offer both and let the purchaser select.

If you had read my post here:
http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...#pid180104
That is what I did.

I don't know about the UK but here in Canada and NA in general, the PCH is hard to come by, from a local supplier. I purchased mine from an online store who brought in 115 units and they were sold out in three days. They now have 1 to 2 month wait for more units. I'm sure more people would purchase from within their country, if the supplies were available.

BTY, you can purchase from ebay USA or Canada but the ebay dealers know the units are in short supply supply and have a tendency to over inflate the price. How about $350 USD for a $230 USD unit? http://cgi.ebay.ca/Media-To-Go-Popcorn-H...240%3A1318

RE: DHL Customs Duty Invoice
That's ebayers for you always after a quick buck.

When the A100 came out we has ebayers actually selling their turn in the pre-order queue!!!

Anyway imagine the confusion on the forum from those that order via courier and get in about 5 days to those that would order via surface mail and take up to 28 days. It would be a nightmare.

More people would purchase if there were more supplies. They can't make enough of them. I'm amazed at that fact myself as like Canada in the UK suppliers are always in and out of stock.
Presently all in-stock:-

I was kind of expecting to hear from a few US buyers as well by posting this thread but I guess it didn't turn out like that - I was under the impression that most buyers in the US have not had to pay a customs tax

I've bought other items that have been shipped from China and never seen a bill like this.

RE: DHL Customs Duty Invoice
Were they shipped by a courier or by surface mail. Couriers have no choice but to declare your goods etc to customs and pay yor fees on your behalf.
Was the value of previous items as high as the value of the PCH, small items are too costly to inspect and process.

Hard to feel any sympathy when you pay a pittance in comparison to other countries charges in any case.

RE: DHL Customs Duty Invoice
I am in EU and when I import 150 pcs from Popcornhour I was charged 14% (this is not VAT). VAT is separate.
So is there any official document for the TARIC code from POPCORNHOUR?

RE: DHL Customs Duty Invoice
Just the luck fo the draw i'm afraid. I imported about 20 pairs of Ugg boots into the UK and didnt get customs charges. I then imported two pairs on thier own and both consignments got stopped and i had to pay an extortionate amount and had to pay upfront before the goods were released. You have compared to others paid very little espiecally compared to the Dutch forum members.

Iam very surpised that you were not aware that you would have to pay for anything that you import into your country.

With regards to wether you go direct or to a supplier, in my case i went to a supplier, i knew it would take longer and would be more expensive (luckily, thanks to ta few deals on the net at the time mine was only about £10 more expensive than if i went to PCH direct). This way i had somone to go back to and get a replacment from first if it were to break and i wouldnt have any hidden costs to pay. Unlucky for me that mine took over a month to come as i was dealing with some amatuers who couldnt process an order to save thier lifes
