Re. Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
I'm a little puzzled by the moderator's sticky thread telling everyone to set the PCH resolution manually and not use AUTO. My plasma handles all sorts of speeds including 24p, 50 and 60hz and others. The right setting depends on the media, i.e if I'm playing a 24p blu-ray rip, I want the PCH to negotiate 24p or 23.97.. with my plasma, because the plasma advertises that as an available refresh rate. Similarly, if I play a 50 or 60hz media file, the PCH should try to negotiate that too. But I don't want to change the video resolution manually and the remote control shortcuts for resolution don't include all of them (e.g. 24p settings).
I feel this is what AUTO should really be doing and in fact this is what my dvd player's auto setting does, e.g. picks the best compatible resolution. I guess I should post a feature request. |

RE: Re. Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
In the new firmware there is an auto framerate feature, which if turned on will work well with your plasma and make sure that the frame rate of the source material is used (pick the NTSC/PAL/24p setting - effectively this is 60 fps, 50 fps and 24 fps [23.976 fps]).
The reason why the resolution (a separate setting) should not be set to AUTO is because the risk of HDMI handshakes going wrong increases considerably, and we keep getting people with problems due to having AUTO specified as a permanent resolution. In your case, set the resolution to 1080p60, set the TV type to 16:9, set the auto framerate setting NSC/PAL/24p, and choose "Fit to Screen". That way you will not have to mess about. This firmware for the FrameRate DOESNOT have an AUTO option; The options are - Off/NTSC PAL/NTSC PAL24p; Should I select - NTSC /PAL24p? 2. Why 1080p60 rather than 1080p50 for PAL??? Thnx |

RE: Re. Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
It doesnt really matter whether you select 1080/60 or 1080/50 as the Autoframerate will change it to reflect the input source.
The AUTO we are talking about is the Video Output resolution setting. Do not leave any NMT with this setting. That Sony does NOT have 24p. Therefore choose 1080/50 and NTSC/PAL. If any USA members read this choose 1080/60 and do not set autoframerate. USA TV's generally only have NTSC whereas European TV's have both NTSC and PAL. The WIKI says 1080/60 or 720/60 so that it works for ALL Tv's and not just those with NTSC and PAL. That definitely does *not* work for me (I have latest firmware). Have you tried a 24p movie? I have tried Framerate Sync set to NTSC/PAL/24p and had Video Output set to 1080p 60hz or AUTO - playing a 24p Blu-ray rip results in terrible stuttering. Turning off Framerate Sync and setting Video Output explicitly to 1080p 23.976hz resulted in a perfect picture. I've just noticed something worse too with latest firmware - getting audio dropouts on movies that never used to be a problem... oh dear Chris |

RE: Re. Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
it is not a conversion of any kind - but an output change between refresh rates based on the source file
It reads the source file type and if PAL switch to correct output for PAL which is 50hz, if NTSC it switch to correct output for NTSC which is 29.976hz, and if source is 23.976 or 24 it switch to 1080p23.976 Naturally all this can be done manually in the video output settings - but after many requests this automatic output function was made because many users felt it was either difficult or to time consuming to check every time. It can and should be configured in various ways to match the capabilities of the screen, to avoid the feature trying to switch to an output not supported by the screen. RE: Re. Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
Spawn, I've noticed you may have a similar setup. I have a KRP-600A and Denon AVC-A1XVA. Framerate sync definitely is not a baby smooth as hardcoding it to 23.976. Additionally, I never had DTS issues before this latest firmware and like a dumbass I upgraded anyway, expecting lots of bug fixes which weren't there, and now I DO have DTS playback dropouts. That firmware is a step backward for me.

RE: Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
So the really stupid question is - If you shouldn't set it to AUTO, then why is the option even there?
Answer: Because it's supposed to work. So if it's supposed to work and it doesn't, there's a bug! So fix it already PCH! Or, better still - delete this option and revise the firmware to allow write access to NTFS like you said you would by November last year. |

RE: Re. Do NOT choose AUTO video resolution
The AUTO option is there to solve HDMI handshake problems, as a temporary solution. Once you have got the picture back with AUTO, you go to the setup menu and pick a resolution supported by your TV.
