Everytime there is a firmware release I look forlornly to see if this support has arrived and nothing. I guess I must be lucky or have modest needs since I have yet to see any features or fixes in the past 3-4 firmware releases that impact me.

Couldn't agree more. The only feature I find missing from the device - the ability to play AAC HE audio, the way the world is moving - is still absent from the device despite many user pleas and hints that it is coming (yeah right). What are they frightened of.

RE: [A-100] Firmware 01-17-090204-15-POP-402-000 (12.06.2009)
That would be a very old post. Yesterday I added this bug fix release to the email notification thread nothing about that firmware. It is very old firmware and was the stepstone update if i remember right.

This bug fix is the latest release. It is not a 'proper' release just a quick release to fix one of the most annoying bugs DTS dropout for those with DTS decoding amps etc.

RE: [A-100] Firmware 01-17-090204-15-POP-402-000 (12.06.2009)
Though I was not plagued by any of the problems addressed by this firmware, I upgraded my PCH firmware with this anyway. What can I say, I am a completionist freak Wink

The good news is, it doesn't breaks anything. So you can upgrade without fear!

Hoping for these to be addressed in future firmwares -
1) idx/sub support
2) Save Zoom settings
3) Save Subtitle's Size and Location settings
After these, even if firmware development stops, I wouldn't mind Smile

All,
Great work PCH team! Like many others, I was disappointed a little, but, my expectation was too high to begin with.

One question, for those who upgraded, do you see any speed improvements in terms of browsing or switching in between files? i.e. buffering speed improve at all? espeically with photos? I may be minority here, I am not looking for any new things, I just thought this is a lag behind function. Just curious to see if it is worth the upgrade.

P.S.: Last FW upgrade, this was not published, but I found the buffering speed has actually has significant improvements!

RE: [A-100] Firmware 01-17-090204-15-POP-402-000 (12.06.2009)
Updated firmware over the internet, went flawlessly and finished in record time.

That said, I can't wrap my ahead around why idx/sub support is still not there. I have a DVD-Player by Sigmatek which is quite a few years old and even that can play idx/subs and subs that are names .en.srt. Instead of re-inventing the wheel it might have been easier to just acquire the knowledge from the chip supplier.

I'll hazard a guess here that the next major firmware release will coincide with the release of the next model, but with all the hush-hush the community's good-will is seriously tested. And we, the community are the prospect buyers of that next model. My opinion is still that you need more man-power, at least one programmer and better marketing.

RE: [A-100] Firmware 01-17-090204-15-POP-402-000 (12.06.2009)
I installed this update and I agree - there is really NOTHING! No difference in speed with photos, no better with subtitle and STILL NO DOLBY DIGITAL for Philips/Sony amplifiers!!!

I'm quite sure the only reason for this update is to give the impression that they still care of A-100 owners - THE TRUTH IS that THEY DON'T!!!

I would only want my PCH to play my files with good image and sound - nothing more.

Now I know it's the highest time to get rid of this piece of crap and buy WD TV HD! I have borrowed one from my friend and all audio tracks are properly passed through my Philips. If I manage to sell PCH and buy WD it should save some money for a new HDD.

Allways thought Dolby Digital DD was AC3

and Wikipedia confirms

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ac3

so set AC-3 to raw pass through and your Receiver should work with it on the SPdif COAX cable.
---------------
If your Amp. does work with the unaltered AC3 stream your AMP has a problem with that stream nothing to do with the PCH.
Maybe Sony and Philips try to do a DRM handshake with the source..... or some other smart proprietary stupidity.

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box...

Jorgo;

There's some truth to what you're saying, regarding the community's good will. But let's at least sit tight until Monday, when the specs of the new machine are announced, then see how things develop thereafter.

idx/sub support is not there as it is proving difficult to implement for them, you can't just go and buy it by the way. If you look HERE you will see a summary of what has happened so far.

I wont guess I'll tell you that there will NOT be any 'major' firmware update at the same time as the new player is announced, released or whatever. The new player has delayed development of A110/A100 firmware for a short period meaning, that only small bug fix releases have happened. When the player is launched then resource will be spread across all devices as not only will A100 firmware development continue but they will also benefit from any of the new models improvements, as they will be back ported where possible.

You can always tell when the next major firmware update is coming in any case. Just watch the beta firmware changelog, its on beta1, it will go through beta firmwares before RC releases. Then a major firmware releae will come.

Why do people see new models as a threat. Remember why you bought an NMT, it is a developing product from a forward thinking company. We should want new development otherwise the company will become stagnant as Tvix became until they were jolted back into competition by the NMT.

Remember that this is the NMT Owners forum, there is no us and them on this board.

Well, there shouldn't be, but I've been called a couple of interesting names recently! I think infrequent users of the board don't realise that Mods and Beta-testers are civilians just like the rest of the community.

RE: [A-100] Firmware 01-17-090204-15-POP-402-000 (12.06.2009)
The new firmware installed very nicely - no (new) problems noticed.

Having owned a A-100 for the last 9 months, I have to say I'm quite happy with the box. Yes, it can be a bit frustrating when one firmware was released a couple of weeks after the other with little communication (or maybe I am just spoiled by the past performance of having close release dates or even earlier release for A-100). At the same time, it's worth mentioning that I don't recalling another consumer electronic product where the vendor actually get involved in the user forum (instead of just setting up the forum and moderate the communications) and actually allow the existing users to somewhat influence their product lifecycle development.

The lack of support for idx/sub is a little annoying, but thank goodness for OpenSubtitles.org and VobSub, it has been rather manageable (for the few foreign films that I would rather watch with the sub instead of listening to the dubs).

The problem with playing 1080p mkv in conjunction with a graphic-rich YAMJ configuration is the one that had me on the edge for a couple of weeks until I figured out a work-around for it - thanks to others on this forum whose sharing of their troubleshooting/work-around actually had me look in the right direction.

While the PCH boxes remains, in my opinion, a nice gadget for those with reasonable amount of technical computer knowledge (i.e. not afraid to look beyond the GUI and figure out WTF is not working), it can be a bit scary for others who just want something simple (albeit less flexible) and works. For example, my wife was overwhelmed by all the configuration/tuning options within the Sharp Aquos, while I was smiling ear-to-ear knowing I could optimize the screen to my exact liking. A couple of my friends jumped on the PCH and are quite happy with it, but we recommended another friend of ours to opt for a simpler/dumber device instead (since he lacks both the technical knowledge and the home networking setup to benefit from PCH). I'm sure our friends at Syabas will in time clean up those bugs so everyone can enjoy the technology without having to look beyond the GUI and wonder WTF...

Syabas has definitely abandoned the A100/A110/B110 6 months ago to place all efforts to release the new products.
I may sound grumpy but after owning my A100 for 18 months and seeing useless features added while the basic support for PAL/NTSC that was advertized is ignored and for the last 6 months only “Bug fixes” has been released I think this generation of PCH is dead.

I completely agree with you. Dodgy

When I first got my A100 12 months ago, I was initially excited about Syabas implementing new updates and quickly fixing bugs. However, after seeing how little they have accomplished over the last year, I'm completely disappointed.

Now that the nvidia ion is out, I'm hoping to get back to the XBMC world.

OK, bye... bye....

do you know a lot of appliances were they give you added functionality after you've bought it?
Check the release notes on those 12 months of firmware development and also see the impact on the NMT developer community and the stuff they released.

Good luck with the Nvidia Ion but I sort of expect you'll be posting on an other forum how good your cheap NMT could display all this HD stuff.

I did it but there is only noise from the speakers -DTS & PCM work fine.
This is not a problem in Sony & Philips as they play perfectly the output from my notebook and WD TV HD.

Don't You really understand? I don't care all this online stuff in PCH as it causes the device to hang all the time. I want it to do its basic function - play media files (let me quote the first line from its specification: "Popcorn Hour A-100 allows you to pull in digital video, audio and photos from various sources for your enjoyment on your HDTV or Home Theater setup." so it should do it!!!) Why other Sigma-based NMTs do it right and PCH can't? For Internet browsing everyone prefers PC but for HD content watching it's natural we use PCH! Remember a jack of all trades is master of none
I would preffer to have a master of HD media files instead of this PCH which can't give good AC3 raw to my amplifier! And I have to watch most of the films in Stereo instead of 5.1!!!
