Lets Play a Game. Re: The New PCH
I think a game is in order. With the advent of the info on the new PCH, I think we should each take a guess about it's new features and (most important) the price tag. Keep in mind the A-110 sells for $215 USD.

---------------------------------------------------------

I'll go first.

1) It will play blu-ray but the drive will not be included.
2) It will take a hard drive but it too, will not be included.
3) Wireless N will be built in and included.
4) It will have a 1 Gb nic
5) This unit will have fan cooling.

Price tag - $350 USD

I would guess it could handle DRM so that music subscription sites and netflix would be available. Also, the interface will be sweet. As beautiful as popped kernels of popcorn look, I bet they find something prettier to display.

Mmm... I don't think wireless will be standard. A lot of people don't use it...

... then again, this is meant to be the flagship mofo NMT. It could be all pimped-out, "to the max"!

RE: Lets Play a Game. Re: The New PCH
It saddens me to admit it, but I won't be able to buy the new NMT. Not for a year, at least.

I'm four weeks from the end of term, and I've just discovered that I'm broke. I'm not gonna be earning this summer, so the financial situation won't improve before September. And then Year 4 kicks-off, and that's the longest of the whole course... so, basically, no money for me.

Gutted.

Ok, the key here is mainly to provide a price. The things your suggesting explains your price tag,

Werner told me (you all, are not to know this), the person closest to the price tag will receive a free new dfhdvsjgbfgjjfndbd, top of the line.

So come on. We want the price and the reason your suggesting that price.

Bidding ends when Werner pops his cookies.

Heh I'll bite

For your list.

1) It will play blu-ray but the drive will not be included.
2) It will take a hard drive but it too, will not be included.
3) Wireless N will be built in and included.
4) It will have a 1 Gb nic
5) This unit will have fan cooling.

I say 1, 2, 3, and 5. It will play standard DVD's and have either a nifty lcd or vfd screen to make it look more like a standard piece of home theater equiptment.

Now personal wishlist, support for flash and drm for hulu/netflix.

Pricing, $319.99 which would be competitive with blue ray players able to stream netflix (You can pick one up for about $250.00) but with the added ability for a hard drive and to network stream well as a server giving you the ability to go higher in price.

I swear the day I can buy one box that does what a popcorn hour a-110/roku/hulu/dvd(sure blue ray too) all in one box with minimal needs to tweak on it I would spend upwards of $400 on it. All the time I have worked on my different HTPC's and XBMC's and tweaking them I just want the godly box Smile

RE: Lets Play a Game. Re: The New PCH
the price will be $249.95
it will have 512 MB ram
apple lossless codec
1000 M/Bit network
java

the price is picked because it may not be to far away from the A-110 but it will be more expensive.

1) That's a good way to shoot yourself in the foot. It doesn't make sense not to include the drive. Disaster if they don't.
2) Correct.
3) Wireless N or the best wireless in the world cannot simply compete with a wired 100Mbit connection (anyone who says otherwise is lying). Wireless is the work of the devil and should be optional only.
4) If it is based on the SMP8642 chip it won't unless they include an additional chip for GbE. Check the specs here: http://www.sigmadesigns.com/Products/SMP...642_br.pdf
Only 100Mbit is supported. Why do you think hdi offers 100Mbit as standard and if you want GbE you get an additional RJ45 port?
5) If fan is included well what can I say? Only for those who enjoy watching movies while using their vacuum cleaner. This is a major no no. Many chose pch instead of tvix for this reason alone.

Price I don't mind. As long as it is under 4 figures (cost of htpc).

I'm getting a little deja vu here, but I'm still going to take the bait. Big Grin

Why would it be a disaster? The PCH A-100 and A-110 (and for that matter the B110, the egreat range, HDX900 and 1000, kaifa ep6000, kaiboer k100 and k200, electron ehp606, iobox, istar, suno and the icy box) all play DVD's but don't have a DVD drive.

Why bump the price up and include a drive when most people will be happy with the hardware and licensing to play Blu Ray iso's?

You also need to wonder if the Blu ray functionality includes the ability to play protected retail BD's or just unprotected ones in which case the drive is even more useless.

I'm thinking
ability to play BD iso's
maybe a small VFD or LCD
Internet browsing capability

Storage Options
C-200, A-110, DAS400, Denon 1909 via HDMI, TXP42X10, KEF Q3 and Q9C surround

100% agree. If it keeps the price down i'd prefer it didn't come with the drive. I'd rather have the option to add it later then pay for it now. I have no desire to have a blue ray drive at the moment.

In my opinion its more of a risk to include the drive and jack the price up even more then it is just to make it optional. But then again everyones got their opinions on whats best Smile
