Successful wireless streaming of 720p/1080p movies.
I just wanted to post to this list to let everyone know of my success of wirelessly streaming my 720p and 1080p movies to my Popcorn hour. I tested it using a 720p Blu-Ray rip and a 1080p Transformers 2 Video Trailer.

I'm using 2 (two) Apple Airport Extreme routers in 5ghz (N only) mode to create a bridge. This network is fast enough to watch (without frames skipping) both 720p and 1080p content.

My main Airport Extreme (Dual Band) is configured to 'allow this wireless network to be extended' and my other Airport Extreme (Fast ethernet) participates in this network. THe A-110 is connected to the Ethernet port on the Fast Ethernet Airport Extreme and the USB Disks are connected to the Airport Extreme (Dual Band) downstairs.

My wireless network (for this purpose) is running @ 5Ghz and 802.11n only.

I tried (unsuccessfully) to achieve this using Netgear PowerlineHD adaptors, 802.11n wireless bridge using 2.4ghz gear and using my Airport Extreme @ 2.4ghz in mixed mode (g+n).

I'm happy with this setup, and SMB from the Airport Extreme is fast enough to share the movies. I just hope we can get AFP working!

Cheers

- Ryan.

You might want to change that title to "Successful wireless streaming of 720p/1080p movies!" Wink

Glad you got it going. I still have to unwind the cable when going 1080p, at least for some months more.

Audio, video, disco - I hear, I see, I learn.

I also got a successful wireless setup streaming 1080p. I've found that there are many issues that affect streaming when you get into the 12Mps and above range. Sometimes I would think it was the wireless setup that was causing hanging problems and it was the NAS.

My setup is Dlink DNS-323 with twonkyvision installed streaming to two A-110's, one is hooked up with a netgear powerline adapter(which btw only works if both plugs are on the exact same circuit, if it has to go through a breaker forget it) and the wireless setup using the Linksys dual band wireless gaming bridge on 5ghz band.
Both play 1080p HD mkv files with no problem so I'm not touching it.

I also had no trouble wireless streaming between two Airport Extremes in 5GHz-only mode. To get uncompressed Blu-rays (30Mbps+) to stream without stuttering, however, I had to use Fast Ethernet AEBSs kept to the 7.1 firmware, as anything later seemed to throttle the maximum throughput to about 3MB/sec instead of the 10MB/sec with the old firmware. Maybe they've fixed that with the Dual Band models? I wired the house up anyway so I could do more stuff over the network at once.
