MKV file no audio
Helo,
I have an MKV file, which plays without sound. It plays correctly with sound on my PC (with VLC). I have subtitles and I can change it, but I cannot change audio channel and there is no audio at all. Any idea, why? Here is the mediainfo file: Complete name : Steamboy.mkv Format : Matroska File size : 3.77 GiB Duration : 2h 6mn Overall bit rate : 4 277 Kbps Encoded date : UTC 2008-02-17 09:43:44 Writing application : mkvmerge v2.1.0 ('Another Place To Fall') built on Aug 19 2007 13:40:07 Writing library : libebml v0.7.7 + libmatroska v0.8.1 Video ID : 1 Format : AVC Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec Format profile : High@L5.1 Format settings, CABAC : Yes Format settings, ReFrames : 16 frames Muxing mode : Container profile=Unknown@5.1 Codec ID : V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC Duration : 2h 6mn Nominal bit rate : 2 625 Kbps Width : 1 920 pixels Height : 1 040 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16/9 Frame rate : 23.976 fps Resolution : 24 bits Colorimetry : 4:2:0 Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.055 Title : BD 1920x1040 x264 Writing library : x264 core 56 Encoding settings : cabac=1 / ref=16 / deblock=1:0:0 / analyse=0x3:0x133 / me=umh / fpel_cmp=sad / subme=7 / me-prepass=0 / brdo=1 / mixed_ref=1 / me_range=32 / chroma_me=1 / trellis=2 / 8x8dct=1 / cqm=0 / deadzone=21,11 / chroma_qp_offset=0 / threads=1 / nr=0 / decimate=0 / mbaff=0 / bframes=16 / b_pyramid=1 / b_adapt=1 / b_bias=0 / direct=3 / wpredb=1 / bime=1 / keyint=200 / keyint_min=20 / scenecut=40 / rc=2pass / bitrate=2625 / ratetol=1.0 / rceq='blurCplx^(1-qComp)' / qcomp=0.60 / qpmin=15 / qpmax=25 / qpstep=4 / cplxblur=20.0 / qblur=0.5 / ip_ratio=1.30 / pb_ratio=1.25 Audio #1 ID : 2 Format : FLAC Format/Info : Free Lossless Audio Codec Codec ID : A_FLAC Duration : 2h 6mn Bit rate mode : Variable Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Resolution : 16 bits Title : FLAC 2.0 16bit 48kHz Writing library : libFLAC 1.1.4 (UTC 2007-02-13) Language : Japanese Audio #2 ID : 3 Format : AC-3 Format/Info : Audio Coding 3 Codec ID : A_AC3 Duration : 2h 6mn Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 448 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Stream size : 404 MiB (10%) Title : Dolby Digital 5.1 Language : Japanese Audio #3 ID : 4 Format : AC-3 Format/Info : Audio Coding 3 Codec ID : A_AC3 Duration : 2h 6mn Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 448 Kbps Channel(s) : 6 channels Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz Stream size : 404 MiB (10%) Title : Dolby Digital 5.1 Language : English Text #1 ID : 5 Format : ASS Codec ID : S_TEXT/ASS Codec ID/Info : Advanced Sub Station Alpha Title : Arial ASSA Language : English Text #2 ID : 6 Format : ASS Codec ID : S_TEXT/ASS Codec ID/Info : Advanced Sub Station Alpha Title : Arial ASSA Language : French Text #3 ID : 7 Format : ASS Codec ID : S_TEXT/ASS Codec ID/Info : Advanced Sub Station Alpha Title : Arial ASSA Language : Spanish Text #4 ID : 8 Format : ASS Codec ID : S_TEXT/ASS Codec ID/Info : Advanced Sub Station Alpha Title : Arial ASSA Language : Portuguese |

RE: MKV file no audio
FLAC, which is the #1 audio track is not supported as embedded audio codec, only as codec in audio-only files.
Presumably if you just remove the FLAC track from the MKV, everything will work. Download mkvtoolnix which contains mkvmergeGUI, and use mkvmergeGUI to remove the FLAC soundtrack, then remux the file and try again. RE: MKV file no audio
Try pressing the audio button on the remote to switch to the next audio instance, don't know if this will work for this specific movie but I use it to swap between the director talking and the actual movie audio.

RE: MKV file no audio
It indeed helped, thanks. But shouldn't I be able to change audio channels even if the first audio codec is not supported? Or even better PCH should change to the second one by default if the first is not supported.

Quote:But shouldn't I be able to change audio channels even if the first audio codec is not supported? I suppose you should, and usually you can switch between audio tracks on the fly using the audio button. I dont know why you cant for this one Quote:Or even better PCH should change to the second one by default if the first is not supported. Well, sometimes we just have to do things ourselves, but the idea isnt bad ![]() But overall you should feel happy the file will even play at all, since its way out of spec Format profile : High@L5.1 Format settings, CABAC : Yes Format settings, ReFrames : 16 frames Living room: C200/A200/A100 HDMI to Pioneer KURO KRP-500A plasma / Denon AVR 3808 / KEF 5005.2 / B&W DM685 Kids room: C200/A110 HDMI to Panasonic 42PZ85, Optical to Logitech Z5500. RE: MKV file no audio
If this bothers you, you can run your file through the latest version of MKVmerge and set the AC3 track as track 1 and the FLAC track as track 2.
