Manual hard drive partitioning for nmt use from linux pc
Hello all,

I'm nearly through the long, laborious process of shuffling files around on my esata hard drive, from a resized NTFS partition to an EXT3 partition at the end of the drive. This wouldn't be such a big deal except I had to do it in batches (it was more than half full to start with). I'm fairly pleased with myself, mostly patience rather than the technical prowess. Tongue

This brings me to my next hurdle though- manually creating the 2 NMT partitions (apps and swap) at the beginning of the drive and then resizing the media partition to fill the remaining space. The wiki on manual install is very informative, but I'm unsure as to how large I should make _my_ partitions.
It's a 1 TB drive, and I'm using an e-great m34a (sata-esata adapter), if it makes any difference.

How strict are NMT's regarding their system partition sizes, and how much space am I really likely to need in each? As I'm dealing with a reasonably large drive, I'd like to give plenty of room for additional/user-created apps down the road, but how much "plenty" is has me stumped.

Suggestions, real world examples from your own setup, and similar experiences are all very welcome.

Use an external SATA enclosure with the eGreat M34a | keypress - ir remote key emulation on command line

lol...I have been setting here all weekend moving stuff around on all my hardrives basically doing the same thing and finding out one of my computers has a issue with the rear esata port..trying to get enough room to re-partition it from ntfs to ext3 since everyone says its faster plus I want to try out the apps.

I'm setting mine up (1gb hd) to about 75% linux and the rest 25% to ntfs don't ask why keeping that ntfs because I really don't know.

Not sure what either of you are doing?

The NMT formats the HDD to Ext and partitions it when you first indsall the HDD.

If you then have a large amount of data to move to the storage partition then use USB Slave if your NMT has it or use the Fast Copy Method.

I have a 8Gb CF card and you can see how the NMT formatted that in the USB slave Guide, guides section. Basically less then 1Gb for both the Apps parittion and the swop space partition. I always suggest 2Gb as space,

A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI
CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407

Take a look at my wiki article on manual partitioning and app installation if you haven't already.

My guess is that you can change their sizes, and within reasonable limits, it will still work. Just go ahead and try it. The worst thing that will happen is that it will reject your partitioning, and refuse to mount the file systems under the correct paths.

Format your hard drive and install NMT apps in 10 minutes or less!

ioBox 100HD + 1.5TB Seagate SATA
openSUSE 11.1 server with 14 hard drives

I'm already using an external drive, and the data is already on it- hence the NTFS-shuffle (apparently the hottest craze Tongue )

Thank you for the response, it looks like those are pretty well sizes in your guide vs the "manual install guide" in the wiki. I may take your suggestion to double up, because as BuddyBoy said..

Thanks, I'll let you both know how it turns out in a day or two.

A long time ago I tried creating an additional partition on the drive for NTFS, thinking it would make things
easier to access from Windows and for copying new contents. After much trial and error,
I concluded that it was not worth doing. I simply let the NMT install partition the remaining space as EXT3.
