Great experience with FTP Drive utility
I just got my PCH A-110 last week and it's terrific, I love it! So thanks to the developers and to everyone providing support on this forum.
Anyway, the reason for my post is that I wanted to share with you the great experience I have had with a little utility called FTP Drive http://www.killprog.com/fdrve.html My setup is as follows: - PCH A-110 sits upstairs and is wired to my router - My PC (running Windows XP) sits downstairs and is connected through to my router via 200 Mbits Homeplugs I use SABnzbd for Usenet downloads on my PC. Upon completion of the par2 / unpack process, This software allows you to "push" downloaded content to the folder of your choice based on the category of the download (TV, Movies, etc.). I just bought a new 1Tb internal hard drive for the PCH and wanted to save all my downloaded videos on there. The first thing I did was to set up the PCH internal HD as a SAMBA network drive. That was very straightfoward and it worked BUT, to my dismay, the speed was really slow at just c. 2.3 MB / sec. So an 8 Gig MKV file would take around 1 hour or so to transfer - not great. ![]() I then compared network speed and tried to do the same on an FTP connection using CuteFTP. The speed there was nearly twice as fast at c. 4.2 MB / sec. Since the FTP protocol seemed to be much more efficient than Samba on my network, I tried to find out a way of mapping an FTP site to a drive listed under under "My Computer" and accessible by SABnzbd to save completed downloads. I first came accross NetDrive which worked fine, but some strange reason, the speed achieved was not really much better than with Samba. I then came accross FTP Drive which is less well known than NetDrive. It is very simple to use and automatically maps my PCH A-110's internal HD as a drive under windows XP every time I boot my PC. The achieved transfer speeds I got was the same as CuteFTP, i.e. 4.2 MB / sec which is much better than NetDrive or Samba. That's the best solution I found on my setup to date and I just wanted to share my experience on this. I don't know if my network speeds can be improved further - if anyone has an idea please let me know
