WHS streaming stutter

I was wondering if anyone can point me to a mobo/configuration they are using that does not stutter. I know some do, some don't, and I wanted some recommendations from real world use before building.

Stuttering may or may not arise from the motherboard or configuration of the device (poor NFS or SMB implementations, poor NIC config or whathaveyou).

But - it can also originate from poor encodings in the media files, in which case you could have the best device on earth but the movie would still stutter. It could also originate from a poor network environment. You would want this checked just as much or more than the host you are about to make, assuming you are attempting to do a DYI server/NAS with WHS?

If you feel there are issues with WHS, there are plenty of alternatives, like FreeNAS and Openfiler, Clarkconnect and just about any Linuxdistro, Mac Mini's etc. (and lundman's ZFS-RAID!).

then let's start with the encoding, what do you suggest for the best encoding ? Obviously, Tonmtui is used quite a bit.

There are plenty of forums (including this one) that have lot's of threads and articles concerning the optimization of a/v encoding formats, containers, streams etc; videohelp.com and avsforum for starters.

ToNMT seems like a very good toolset to start with for ripping, many people seem to enjoy it.


As for network setup, there are plenty of guides for this as well. I don't know how savvy you are so it would be unfair of me to recommend you any guide, basic or advanced. And as for mobo's I really don't have anything updated to contribute with. Google is your friend, and hopefully some other forumites!
