how to extract subtitles from a DVD

What is the best way to extract subtitles from a DVD?
(to use in my mkv file)

I tried imTOO dvd subtitle ripper but the resulting sub and idx file weren't supported by PCH, is it possible to directly extract to an srt file?

Try freeware Subrip.

It's been awhile since I've ripped/converted subtitles, but as far as I know, you can't rip straight to SRT or any other text-based subtitle format.

You'll have to manually go through the SUB/IDX (picture-based subtitle format) and tell each "image" of each letter what letter it actually is. I think the process is called ACR(?).

SubRipper should help greatly with this. Edit: SubRip is the name of the program, as mentioned above.

Or just download SRT files from subscene.com -- save yourself the time.
