New User. Slightly disappointed
Hey guys, I setup my new popcorn hour A110 today which I bought to replace a trusty but slightly prone to crashing, Divx Connected DSM-330.

The A110 was easy to setup using Myihome server & plays everything fine.
However the interface & remote are just so poorly designed. The interface pauses for a few seconds to load a few more lines of text & theres no thumbnails. The photo browser feels like it running on dialup; several seconds to load a 100kb jpg. Really clunky & my girlfriend who drives the remote is not very happy at all Smile Sure it has a few shortcuts to jump though lists but my DSM-330 could scroll through hundreds of thumbnails(smoothly) in seconds.

I'm baffaled to how this thing has so many good reviews. Thats why I was dumb enough to buy it.

Is there another way to set this thing up? Maybe MYihome is the slow link. The memory useage is about 3 times higher than Divx Connected's server too. Can the interface be brought to life? maybe something a little more alive because right now its about as dynamic as DOS.

I'm using a wired connection right now.

PS. Is it possible to shut down the PC from within PCH menus?

have you updated the firmware? That speeds up browsing with the normal interface.

Users who don't like the stock interface typically install some index.htm and jukeboxes.

What makes the NMT/PCH so great compared to other products in this family (imo) is two things. A. the players diversity....it plays almost anything you want....and is open to outside tweaking. B. The community and 3rd party developers are awesome.

Yes I have the lastest firmware. I'm trying to install some kind of skin right now. instructions aren't very clear tho.

Never have figured that out. How can the speed of the menus make or break the PCH? No, they are not fast but how much time do you spend in the menus and they do seem in line with other small devices.

Oh well.........................................

Here's hoping you find a device more to your liking. I have a feeling the positive reviews you have read are more about the ability to play a variety of files, and the ability to load a number of user generated programs to handle downloading via usenet, torrent, rapidshare, etc. etc. If your more worried about the speed of interface vs these things then a different device is likely prudent. The C-200 may end up with the type of interface your looking for but in your shoes i wouldn't drop $$$ for maybee 6 months while the bugs are ironed out and the users get it customized to see if it will actually be what you are looking for.

As an aside, although it doesn't matter in your case, i think the reason the NMT interface is so slow scrolling as opposed to other devices in the same power range is because the nmt interface is a (partially implemented) web browser. This is bad in terms of speed of the application, but great in terms of running user applications(like jukeboxes, download managers, etc). If the NMT had a hard-coded interface as opposed to an html based interface i doubt any of the current jukeboxes would be possible. With the nmt and its html/cgi based interface an advanced user can replace every bit of syabas interface with something custom if they so wish.

nuke12;

Exactly.

I'll start by saying that it's, of course, anyone's choice to decide whether and why they don't like something, and I'm not going to try to convince anyone to see it my way. But my view is the same...

... how can the speed of a menu dictate your satisfaction or otherwise with a media streamer?! I really don't get it. Comparing what these things cost with what they do, it seems to me a rather ungrateful complaint. Like turning down a cut-price Ferrari because you don't like the colour...!

But all the same, I wish the OP all the best in his quest for a faster menu. I only hope that when he finds it, he finds it in a media streamer that doesn't suck and/or cost a fortune.
