Dead laptop

All,

Just to let you know that my updates to YAMJ will be slow to non-existent for a while as my laptop hard-drive has died (along with all the development environments for YAMJ ) and my son has taken my desktop with him to Uni.

I was hoping to wait for Windows 7 before purchasing a new laptop, but it looks like I'll have to do it sooner and upgrade to Win7 later.

On the plus side, it might slow EJP down with updates to his skin

Look around, you might be able to find a laptop that has a coupon for a free win7 upgrade when it comes out. I know dell was doing that for laptops/computers the months leading up to the release of vista

actually all laptops (and desktops) sold between mid july and end of october (all brands) are supposed to come with a voucher. Personally I bought a Dell laptop 2 weeks ago and I got a voucher with it (only reason I bought it now and not in October)

On a different note, sorry to hear what happened to your laptop; don't have my NMT yet (C200 on the way), but have been doing some preparation work on my network shares with the great YAMJ; very good stuff, thank you !!!

Sorry to hear that - it's always after an event like this that you realise your backup plan is slim to non-existent.

I don't suppose the hard drive would work if you took it out and put it in an enclosure (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?menuno=84399)?

I was hoping not have have to install/configure the OS twice in a month..

Oh, I have plenty of backups But it doesn't help if there's nothing to run them on...
And then you never quite get the configuration back to the way it was, either.

All computers come with a free upgrade to windows7 right now, and the RTM version on MSDN is exactly the same as the disk that will ship when released.. also its fairly close to vista and an upgrade will not kill anything you setup.

That sucks... I sympathise, i'm spending best part of week finding places to stash stuff whilst I upgrade to a LSI megaraid on my server from software raid... wifes laptop... kids pc... old pata drives... USB drives on the A-110... dvdr's... mates with FTP space... the prospect of a new base OS sucks bad enough, but twice! that's a no! at least my boot/root/swap is on a disposable old pata drive.

I might even have to venture to the evils of my old compaq DLT drive as i have loads of cartridges albeit 10GB uncompressed!!!

Bad luck matey....im sure we could get a coupla hundred users to chip in a quid each to get you up and running again....I would for all the YAMJ work you've done to date

i love the way the A-110 works, but thats especially because of YAMJ.
