So if I had one of these shipped from the US (to the UK), I'd have to pay VAT but not import duty?

VAT is a tax you pay in your country on items that are soled to you. ie. You would pay this if you went out to your local store and bought a TV.

Duty is a tax you can pay when you import an item into your country. Depends on the item and different items get taxed differently.

the PCH is a computer and so the duty rate is 0%, I believe that if it had a blu ray drive in it it would be a media player or similar and would incure a rate of 5-10% or something similar, I can't find the table online now...

Storage Options
C-200, A-110, DAS400, Denon 1909 via HDMI, TXP42X10, KEF Q3 and Q9C surround

So am I right in saying that I won't pay tax at all on this if I buy direct from Popcorn themselves as they won't charge me UK VAT and customs and exercise won't change me import duty because it's classified as a "PC/Network" device?

No you are wrong.

Your country should not charge you import duty but you will still be charged VAT/Sales Tax, unless you are in CA I believe.

Yes I'm at work and my pages take soo long to update I just jumped in.

Everyone will be charged VAT/Sales Tax by their own country at their own countries rate. No one in the EU should be charged import tax at it is zero rated. If it is zero rated in EU then 99/100 USA follows suit.

Sales Taxes in USA vary from 0% upwards depending on which state you live in.

Oops - I clearly need to update my location so as not to have the US flag under my name. I'm in the UK so apologies for the confusion Chris, which was apparent in your responses to my questions.

Edit: Now only if I knew how to change the flag. In the location under User CP I have put United Kingdom but this ain't helped.

Further edit: Am I being blind... There doesn't appear to be anywhere in the User CP that the flag can be changed.

I believe the only place in the US where sales tax applies is CA, since that's where PCH has an office. Every other state would be 0% sales tax, so it's just shipping cost plus the $299 in the US.

It's not something you can set manually, mate. It's generated from your IP.

Put something in your sig, if being mistaken for an American concerns you...!

Interesting, I'll have two flags when I post then. US one from work, our access to internet is routed out of the US for some reason and UK from home. And this is defo the case, I've just checked the posts I made from home and they're tagged with the Union Jack Smile . I clearly have a very long commute every day Big Grin

Doesn't really concern me but clearly is causing confusion in some of the replies to some of my questions. Personally I think it be better if this was user selected rather than IP generated.

Maybe I'm incorrect but I think when it comes into the USA, they will charge you what ever your state's sales tax is.
