Problem Streaming over Gb Network

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
OK, I decided I did not want to mess around with any of the settings on my MSS since I have other devices connected to my network, not just the C-200

I tried playing Quantum of Solace over smb again and once again it is unplayable due to stuttering. I have myiHome installed as well, so I switched over to that, and QoS played without a hitch (the first few minutes I only tested but couldn't get past the first 5 seconds over smb), so it appears that http is the solution for now. The problem is that http does not recognize Video_TS folders as a dvd, so instead you have to play each vob individually, whereas smb does this.

Cheers,
Damian

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
I placed a 100mbit switch (WRT54G) between my PC that I stream from and the popcorn hour and that seemed to solve all my probs related to streaming...so my network looks like this...

PC-->GigE Switch(Netgear GS605)-->GigE Switch(Netgear GS108T)-------->100mbit Switch(Linksys WRT54G)-->Popcorn Hour.

So my PC's connection to the GS605 switch is at GigE speed. The uplink from the GS605 to the GS108T is at GigE speed. The connection from the GS108T to the WRT54G is 100/full. And from the WRT54G to the popcorn is 100/full.

Originally I had the popcorn connected to the GS108T and I tried to force the interface to 100/full on the GS108T, but for whatever reason the speed was really slow......less than 2mbit....still scratching my head over that one....

Anyway hope this helps someone.

Craig

Well, this appears to have helped some people, but not others (myself included). I connected a 100 mb switch between my giga-lan computer and the C-200, and I cannot play material that I had no problem with before. I am using myIhome and SMB.

I play QoS over SMB and it is fine. It did stutter when i used the fast foward feature but that is to be expected.
No ihome just streaming off a QNAP NAS

Actually, it MIGHT matter if gigabit is all you have. I'm running a gigabit switch (Netgear GSM7224) and a gigabit router (Netgear WNT854T). If the C-200 is set to autonegotiate (this is not a question -- it is), anyone with this setup is screwed until a firmware update is released to address the problem. The only other alternative is to go out and buy a 10/100 switch (not gonna happen). For the record, I've tried adjusting the speed on the switch port down to 100 FULL with worse results -- it pauses and stutters more than ever, even on DVD's which seemed to stream without a problem.

For me, as long as I know the issue is being taken seriously (and I think it is), I'm happy. I'll find other things to do in the meantime.

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
I tried to set the port on my GigE switch as well to 100/full and like you had much worse results! I assume there was some sort of duplex mismatch because the Popcorn is set to auto negotiate. Luckily I have my old WRT54G still performing routing duties so I just plugged the C200 into one of its switch ports and streaming works quite well ...only high bitrate M2TS I have some stuttering.

I think a week for a new firmware update is a bit optimistic. Not that it can't happen but if I were a betting man, I'd bet we're all going to be waiting for a while...

UPDATE: I found this post from Cheaper_Popcorn on another thread:

RE: C-200 Transfer speed in Gigabit network.

From what I hear, this issue is pretty much priority number one to fix right now, but it will take time.

All of us regular users have tried to explain to people that if they want to become early adopters for the C-200, they need to expect that it will be buggy. If they can't handle that, they had better wait before buying. As an early adopter you have to live with the bugs.

If you missed this then I am sorry, but it has been said many, many times already.

It WILL take time before everything is working properly.

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
On my end setting the NIC on the server to 100 has made it usable for streaming. Not perfect but usable. I get a dropout every so often but its OK.

I would recommend people try a few settings on their servers and see if any of them work.

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
Obviously Syabas's aim is to get the next firmware out with a workaround or fix as soon as possible. They are not tormenting users on purpose.

As always, everything depends on if the fw passes quality checking or not, so 'hopefully next week' as werner mentioned in another thread, is just that, hopefully.

Please hold off a little longer on the tar and feathers if for some reason it doesn't pass QC, ok? Wink

Thanks for chiming in with that update. If it happens, great. If not, it's OK. It's just nice to see that they are actually shooting for next week.

I must have missed the comment someone made about Syabas tormenting users on purpose, though. I'm going to have to go back and reread the thread. I could use a good laugh.

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
Holy hell you have to be kidding me. Just upgraded all of my equipment to gigabit just to make way for the damn C-200.

Angry

Does this justify a cancellation or do you think this will be fixed around the 28th batch ship date?

Keep in mind that no one is saying that gigE will never work, it is just a temporary bug but I expect it is very high on the fix list in an upcoming FW update

Has this switch been set in the current newest release ?
And I guess it is a waste of time to ask if Syabas have any idea weather the 100MB/1000MB issue is HW or SW ?

RE: Problem Streaming over Gb Network
I would assume the nic is currently set to auto 10/100/1000. So far all statements and assumptions point to software. Until there's more information released, or fixes out to test, we won't know for sure.
