Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
I've ripped various clips (not full DVDS) from various original DVDs but for some reason from certain DVDs the aspect ratio has been vertically squashed thus adding horizontal borders (extra borders for 2.35:1 clips).

Yet for other similar DVDs it plays them correctly.

In all cases the original DVDs are commercial PAL widescreen anamorphic (some 16:9/1.85:1, some 2.35:1). The workflow is the same for all, which I have altered slightly but they still show incorrectly

I've compared the properties on all the clips and they are identical for those that are correct and those that are not. The ws flag is present in all and the resolution shows as 720x576 (9/16).

Grease is one title if anyone wants to try and replicate it.

Im using PCH A110 and have the latest firmware
TV is a 1920x1080 plasma
Connecting via HDMI

AV settings on the PCH are...
Video Output: 1080p 50Hz
Video Zoom: Fit to screen
TV Type: 16:9

Many Thanks

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
Hello there, and welcome.

Ripping .VOBs (or partial .VOBs) from within a DVD structure without their support files can cause problems like this. In my experience, it quite often does. Which is why I only rip discs whole.

I'm not sure whether there's anything you can do about it. Maybe someone else can advise.

Thanks

But the majority of clips that I've ripped play fine, it's only a few titles, which I can't understand.

Normally I convert to mpg (using Womble) but either as mpg or VOB they still play incorrectly.

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
Before I bought an A-110 (I now use a C-200...), I used a PS3 for media playback, and because the PS3 couldn't play full DVD structures I had to rip out the .VOBs. I'd say 35% of them didn't represent properly (either with crocked anamorphism, or crocked aspect ratios...), notwithstanding there being widescreen flags on the files.

When I posed this question on Doom9 I was told something to the effect of, "well, d'uh, dickhead. What do you think all those other DVD files are for....?!". I chose to use slightly more polite language!

Personally, I always encourage taking full rips. If you minimise the faffing, you should minimise the potential for playback problems. That's my position, and it's stood me in good stead.

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
mmmmh, strange one that.
as far as i know womble should be adding the correct info to the headers. have you tried editing any header info? its been a long time since i done anything like that, and as i'm at work i cant have a nosey at my old apps to see what i would have used to do it but videohelp.com should help there (i would also have said doom9 but they didnt seem like much help last time).
the only other thing i can think of is possibly the vob is optimised for 4:3 even though its 16:9 eg letterboxed. i had a one like that in the past (city of lost children), it played fine on the dvd player (thanks to the other files on the dvd namely the.ifo) but when it was ripped it was awful, with huge black borders and bad aspect ratio.
not really much help but at least you know you're not mad
i had a quick nosey around, try DVDPatcher see if that helps you.

There is nothing to see here, move along.

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
What you describe is similar to what I experienced. And editing the files' A/R data didn't do me any good.

I realise, before anyone points it out, that people may prefer to rip only what they want to watch and spare some drive space. But, for me, if you want a quiet life you should rip the whole lot. I've got all 950 of my discs ripped, and not one of them gives me a single hiccup on my C-200. On the A-110, every now and then I'd find one that wouldn't run, but we're talking less than 2%.

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
LOL, yea that a perfect "doom forums" response alright.

If it possible rip the files as ISO.

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
Thanks all

I'd previously looked at the header info with pgcedit and it looked fine, no different to those WS clips that played OK (set to 16:9, letterbox for 4:3)

I'd rather not rip the whole DVD in some cases if I can help it as I only want about 10 mins worth of clips which will also save disk space.

All my complete DVD ISOs work fine. I'll try ripping clips to ISOs (not sure if i've tried that already i've tried everything else!).

RE: Incorrect Aspect Ratio on Some DVD Rips
Ripping both full and clips to ISO worked fine.
All show in correct AR.

Many Thanks
