No sound from DTS (6-channel) video over HDMI.
As a consumer, I don't care about the technical side of things.
All I know is, I'm trying to play back a video from the PCH to my TV and I don't get sound and that needs to be fixed. I guess the expected behavior would be a setting which says "convert surround sound to stereo for output". |

The PH can do that for AC3/Dolby Digital, but not for DTS. It's a licensing issue, basically.
DTS is passed through so you'll need a reciever/amp for that, or, change the DTS to an AC3 track. There's a lot of info and guides on how to do the latter in another thread. Audio, video, disco - I hear, I see, I learn. Wiki. Wiki? Wiki! |

I think it helps a bit to understand the licensing issue.
The PCH could have DTS but then Dolby need to be paid for the license and its a rate per channel! They also want a large >£50,000 up front payment. So for a small company new to the market trying to put all their resources into the right areas and keep costs down you can see why its not included. I have tried to find a unit price and the best I could find was £7 on volume of 100,000. As the NMT has taken off perhaps it should be included for those of us without AV amps and the space for it and speakers. An add on USB DTS stereo downsampling card would be great! Or to include a 425-line downsampling just becuase you only had one of the old TVs used in England before they switched to PAL? The PCH delivers the DTS audio to you. If you don't have the equipment to play back this, then get it. Just like you'd need a pair of loud speakers to expect to hear any sound, then you should expect to get a DTS compatible unit to listen to DTS sound. The fact that the PCH decodes AC3 audio is not a signal that it will decode any type of audio signal. If the player wants to f.ex. be able to play back DVDs and digital TV, then it needs to be able to decode AC3 and MPEG audio. DTS is an optional extra. An alternative is to convert the DTS audio to AC3 audio, f.ex. by using the MKV AudioConverter (remember to read the tutorial). Keld R.
