Problems With External srt Subs and MKV Video
Group:
I'm getting my own ripped subs to play with my PCH. It's gratifying. But there have been bumps along the way. And I'm not really there yet. Two days ago, I got subs I'd prepared playing along with a dvd I'd ripped. I learned through trial, error, and monitoring posts on this site that mkv was going to likely be the best video format for doing this. So I ripped a DVD and converted it to mkv using mkvmerge (without any special flags, tags, or switches). And I didn't embed the subtitle. The video played. And the (*.srt file) subtitles displayed. Then I tried again yesterday. And they didn't. When I'd hit the subtitle Aa button, I'd get SUBTITLE:ON. And I know the correct response should be SUBTITLE:ON [FILE]. So I went back to a video file (Curse of the Yellow Flower Blu-Ray) with subs that I'd downloaded from the web. They detect and play fine. But this isn't an mkv-packaged video file. I copied the subtitles downloaded from the web for this movie over to the directory where my mkv file was and changed the filename to match it (case included) in all but the extension. When I played the mkv, I still got SUBTITLE:ON. No subs. I also noticed another strange behavior. When I'd played my mkv two days ago and the subtitles were displaying, the PCH behaved a few times as if it had cached an older version of my subs. There was a line that said "New Sub" that I'd inserted (because I'm editing in a few subs that didn't rip properly or at all). I'd subsequently edited that into the proper text for that line. But the PCH still said New Sub when it started. And there were other subs it was playing that weren't updated. The file I'd put in the directory where the video was had the updates. I verified this. And then the PCH just went into the behavior I described above, where's it's no longer detecting subs at all for the mkv video I'm playing. I don't know if this problem is mvk-related or maybe it's a firmware bug. I bought my PCH in June and have not updated firmware. I'd appreciate if instead of answering this post with "Update your Firmware" some monitoring it will try and correlate this problem with behavior they've seen with their units. Thanks in advance. rlowell |
