It could be getting IO bound across the USB interface; although solid state media like a USB stick is fast, the communication channel of USB is far slower than the SATA connection you have with an internal hard drive.

If this is the case, then my best recommendation would be to use an internal hard drive rather than a USB stick. OverSight has various intensive access database files and loading all of that over USB is probably a fairly slow process in comparison - lordy?
