RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
Oddly enough, I was reading about Samsung plasma's just the other day. A lot cheaper than "equivalent" Panny plasmas, and supposedly have better colour than Panny plasma. The Panny has better blacks.
I also noticed the ultra slim Samsung LCDs dont have any Scart - so thats out for me. I need at least one scart for the time being. All said, I better prioritise on some other things around the house first! Oversight: Jukebox | FeedTime: Automatic nzbs |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
I think the big thing you'll wanna decide is whats most important to you... blacks or color.
I'm not saying that the other choice will be terrible. But each set definitely has its advantages in one or the other. Pannasonic Plasma 50" -->HK254-->Emotiva xpa-5 & upa-2 A100 w/ 500gb HDD, A200 w/ mn100, c200 w/ 2.5" 250gb Calm 2.1, YAMJ - Redefined 1.8a skin, Music Jukebox 8 WHS ex490 w/ 2.5tb's |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
I would say the Panasonic has better black in a dark room but in a well lit room it a toss up if not maybe on the Samsung side and I would have to say color wise Samsung owns Panasonic right now last years Panasonic had better color than this years. As for a scart connection that not really something we use on this side of the pond however I am pretty sure they make scart to component adapters which would get you around that problem until you go all digital with hdmi.
Additional info Here is a link to a scart to component adapter and its not very expensive you might want to check it out Scart Component Adapter |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
Saw a Sammy 6000 LED the other day walking past a store and it made me stop and look as the picture (from bluray) was phenomenal. Makes my 4 year old Sony LCD look dull and lifeless.

Cheers, those Scart-Component adapters only work if the device supports component (YUV?) over scart. I'll have to check , but I think my device just does RGB Scart which will need something like the QED QCV adapter (the signal is different). Oversight: Jukebox | FeedTime: Automatic nzbs |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
I'm making sure I get the sofa's sorted first then I can spend with reckless abandon
![]() I've ordered a BD drive for the C200. in anticipation. however most of my viewing is avi or 720p compressed mkv so I may get something cheap but good value ( eg a Samsung Plasma ) and then take it from there. Sofa's are easier to decide on - you just abdicate all decision making to SWMBO. I was getting too involved in the process, but realise that not "the way forward". I'd sit on a crate with a cushion, and watch a Kuro ![]() If I do go LCD it would probably be the Philips PFL9664 (but that cost a lot more). Oversight: Jukebox | FeedTime: Automatic nzbs |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
FWIW I'm tempted to get this:
http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cu...sku=505752 Only thing is my current position is only about 8ft from the screen so it may be too big to enjoy SD. (It needs a lot of running in according to threads on avforums, which is probably the reason for the big discount - a lot of customer returns due to Image Retention) Oversight: Jukebox | FeedTime: Automatic nzbs |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
Always go for the best blacks.
Why ? Because without proper blacks your vibrant colours look off or washed out. Also the dark scenes do not look dark at all. TV sets are always turned up in the shop, they have to be because your eyes adjust itself to the bright surrounding lights. So yes the tv in the shop will always look brighter than yours at home. As soon as you have it at home you will want to adjust it and reduce the brightness. Then the other characteristics of the set will reveal themselves. Such as (genrally speaking) bad contrast ratios for lcd's. I went for the best colours, both in bright and black modus, and then you end up with a good plasma.(well now at least) That was the reason i went for the best blacks in town, the Pioneer sets. What you choose is your decision, just don't be fooled by the shops settings... PCH-A110 , C-200, Pioneer PDP-LX5090H , Pioneer SC-LX72 ,Vifa Premium 22 XT, Peerless XLS-10 Sub |

RE: Joining the flat-panel brigade..almost...
Cheers I know about shop settings aka "torch mode". Not sure who was talking about viewing in the shop but the advice is noted
![]() With the Samsung Plasma's the general consensus seem to be they are not quite as good as Panny Plasma's , but still have better colour and are a lot cheaper "like for like". The one I linked to cannot be touched at that price it seems. (50" 1080p) There are better sets around of course, for more money. I haven't even seen it properly yet though, just read the reviews and looking at the sales. I think only the huge Kuro's ($$$) are still available new while stocks last so that's not really an option for me
