Apple Lossless (ALAC)
This looks to be a great DMA. The one thing it's missing that would prevent me from buying is Apple Lossless (ALAC). I ripped all my CDs in ALAC and since I've got a bunch of Macs and an Apple TV I don't want to convert to another format.

RE: Apple Lossless (ALAC)
Beeing an iPod + iTunes user, I have everything ripped as ALAC too, and was mighty surprised to find out it wasn't supported, considering ALAC is even less CPU intensive to decode than FLAC even.

So, here's a +1 from me.

Any word on ALAC support, I mean the wiki does say M4P support, which is what ALAC's are Smile

Trues, six in 10 months, but I mean, how many people use OGG in comparison to Apple Lossless?

Is the Apple Lossless Codec Free or does Syabas need to purchase a licence from Apple?

VLC supports the apple lossless codec, so i think it's free.

Well - I dont think thats entirely correct - afaik. .m4p are a container with DRM protection, ALAC are an audio codec, .m4p are DRM protected .m4a, which usually contains AAC audio in a quicktime/mpeg-4 container.

ALAC are not AAC and are usually not DRM protected and thus stored in an unprotected .m4a quicktime/mpeg-4 container

And besides that I cannot find m4p mentioned a single time in the NMT wiki - thus its not correct that the wiki says m4p support.

The PCH specsheet only says support for the following

Audio containers:
AAC, M4A
MPEG audio (MP1, MP2, MP3, MPA)
WAV
WMA
FLAC
OGG

Audio codecs:
Dolby Digital
DTS
WMA, WMA Pro
AAC
MP1, MP2, MP3
LPCM
FLAC
Vorbis

not for m4p (protected m4a containers), and not for the ALAC audio codec. It supports the .m4a container, but not with ALAC, only with AAC audio codec inside.

VLC supports ALAC using the opensource libavcodec - but that doesnt mean its free for Syabas to implement on the NMT which is a commercial player. Considering it is an Apple proprietary format (unlike OGG and Flac which is both open source), I doubt Syabas would be allowed to implement it without paying license and without using original code from Apple. I also havent heard of any other commercial hardware media players, except native apple players, which offers support for ALAC

I cannot say it would be impossible to implement on the NMT, but I would imagine there are some challenges in doing so - and with only a handfull or so of users requesting it in almost a year - I wouldent expect it to get very high priority, if any at all.

Living room: C200/A200/A100 HDMI to Pioneer KURO KRP-500A plasma / Denon AVR 3808 / KEF 5005.2 / B&W DM685
