Video output and Auto Frame Rate confusion
Hi guys,

I am trying to wrap my head around the optimal settings for 'Video output' and 'Auto frame rate'. I have a Panasonic TX-P46G15B plasma (I am in the UK), and on the PCH I watch mainly ripped DVDs (VIDEO_TS), and ripped Blu-Rays (1080p MKV).

I believe my TV handles 24fps material, so when watching an MKV I have set 'Auto frame rate' to 'NTSC/PAL/24'. But what do I set 'Video output' to? Should it be '1080p/23.976', '1080p/24' or '1080p/50' or maybe 'Auto'?

I don't really understand the relationship between the 2 settings!

And should I be changing the settings when switching between watching DVDs and watching MKVs?

RE: Video output and Auto Frame Rate confusion
When you're using the auto framerate sync option - ntsc/pal/24p for example, it means that when you run a movie, mono (pch's media player) will automatically choose what video output to set for optimum playback, either pal (50hz) ntsc (60hz) or 24p (23,975/23,976hz). For DVD's this usually means either pal or ntsc, for blurays usually 24p.

If for any reason it fails to automatically detect it will fall back to your selected Video output and use that for playback.

Since your tv is fullhd I recommend you set your Video output to 1080p60 for best viewing while you're messing around in gaya and doing whatever with it, and set the framerate sync to ntsc/pal/24p so you don't have to worry about changing the video output manually for every movie you load.

RE: Video output and Auto Frame Rate confusion
Thanks for that clarification.

I am slightly confused though that 1080p/60Hz would be optimum for my TV. I assume, as it is a UK model, that it operates in 50Hz mode, so wouldn't 1080p/50Hz be a better default?

RE: Video output and Auto Frame Rate confusion
Nowadays it's different with plasmas lcds leds etc., not like old CRTs. You gotta look at it like an lcd pc monitor for example. I assume you would rather have a higher 60hz refresh rate than a 50hz one Smile

It doesn't matter what model it is if it supports 60hz then I say use it. Also the ntsc/pal/24p option works better if your video output is 1080p60 for some reason. If you were to use 1080p50 then it's possible it won't switch to 1080p60 for ntsc material at all, it will just play it at your current 1080p50 and you'll have judders in your playback. Its sorta buggy that framerate sync it is.

RE: Video output and Auto Frame Rate confusion
Agreed, might as well have the higher refresh in menus, although tbh it's going to make best of no difference.

RE: Video output and Auto Frame Rate confusion
Most of my material is DVD ripped to VIDEO_TS, and I just saw another post that stated these type of files cannot be auto switched, which muddies the water further for me.

I think in this case I will stick to 1080p/50Hz, which should be safest. This would then be used for the menus (which seem fine in 50Hz), and any DVD content which it cannot auto sync (which will virtually all be PAL DVDs).

Thanks for the help!
