Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Hello,
Saturday I received my Popcorn Hour A-200 but today it started to make this loud noise at the startup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Tqg44Gq87Q Is this a firmware thing or hardware? How can I solve this? If it stays like this i'm going to send it back...This sucks. Greetings, Jeroen |

RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Wow that sounds terrible I would suggest checking the metal fins on the fan to make sure they are not bent and coming in contact with the fan blades.

RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Thats the video i posted over in the other thread about the fan noise
.something is surely hitting the fan. you may have to bend some things back in to place around the fan, or if your lucky and ask really nice PCH may ship you out another fan for you to replace. RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Got exactly the same noise on mine.
What I do to solve it is first I took the top off and started the unit. I then touched the heatsink that surrounds the fan. As I went around I found that by pressing or taping on the left-hand side of the heatsink lightly the noise stopped. Now it has not totally fixed it and at random times the noise comes back, and it is honestly as loud or louder than yours. The quickest way is to take the unit and tap it underneath on the left handside a couple of times. If that doesn't work I try about another half dozen taps under and to the left and top of the unit. That stops it. I think it is the fan vibrating the heatsink which makes the noise really loud. If I wanted I could look at the fan mounting/lubricants or fasterners but i can't be bothered presently, I'm going to replace the case with a metal fanless one so can't be bothered to return it. I found a replacement fan/heatsink unit for $2.73 at dealextreme in any case:- ![]() https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8946 far cheaper than returning it to PCH. Poatage is free so if you have $2.73 it may be worth having a spare if you are going to stick with a fan. If you have bought it from a reseller you could return it for nothing I suppose. RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Now i made a video of my own PHC:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxPanfoam3o I didn't see anything special inside the PHC and everything was connected correctly. It's now working okay. If it comes back again then I will open the PHC and check if the heatsink is somewhat lose or something...if it stays like this i will send it back... Anyway, tnx for the help and i would love to hear if there are other suggestions. |

RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Mine did that a couple of times but then settled down. A simple restart seemed to fix it when it did happen.

Not anywhere as loud as in that video mind you, but still what I'd describe as a 'buzzing' sound. Roll on this custom case if it's happening, I'll definitely buy one. |

RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
It is easy to get rid of so far.
There is an alternative I'm trying to get off the ground:- ![]() ![]() It's a 3rd party solution giving us what the A200 should have been IMO, small form metal case to compliment the C-200:- http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=36535 Extra dosh yes, but no fan and a metal case plus good looks make it a winner in my book. Now we just have to get the 3rd party interested enough to go ahead with production. RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Tomorrow I started the PCH and again that anoying sound. I opened it but I couldn't find anything that can cause this problem. The fan looked good, nothing was loose and I just didn't see anything strange....
I'm going to contact the shop where I bought this and sending it back for repair or a new one. I know that it is much quicker to buy a new fan myself but this thing costed me about 170 euro's and for that amount of money I expect that it works perfect... If anyone has more tips I would love to hear them...I will keep you guys updated on this... |

That video of the fan noise bought back very unpleasant memories of media players with fans that had caused me no end of grief. It's very difficult to imagine why they wouldn't have put in a silent fan. Made my choice easier at least... philip |

RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
I had the same noise a few times. The noise lasted for about 10-20 seconds.
When I demounted the fan from the heatsink I noticed the grease leaked out of the fan. Probably the grease can not stand the heat from the processor. I solved this problem by removing the sticker under the fan. If you remove this sticker, you can see the little axle from the fan. I sprayed a silicon grease inside which thickens up a little after it is sprayed on. The silicon grease is made for lubricating hot materials up to 250 degrees celsius and it will not affect the material. You can buy this at your local hardware store. Please try, it works! RE: Broken fan popcorn hour a-200
Nope, but the third party supplier has now seen the buzz created here in the forum, which means it is likely they will go ahead.
They warned in advance though that the solution they are building will not be cheap. Check the poll thread as I think that is where the most updated info will be posted: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=36535 Media tank:A-100 & C-200 TV:Panasonic TH-50PY800MT (HDMI) Audio:Logitech Z-5500 (Coaxial) |
