Egreat vs popcorn hour ?
So, what are the differences in these products, and why choose one over the other?

RE: Egreat vs popcorn hour ?
I've got an Egreat M34A and a C-200. My buddy has an A110 which is a similar chipset as the M34A just a different enclosure and firmware. I have had 0 issues whatsoever with my Egreat and it plays all my media flawlessly. His A110 also works great. I only wish my C-200 worked as well.....
Keep in mind the M34A cannot do an internal HDD and the A110 can. So if you are planing on going with a locally installed HDD then go with another model from Egreat or an A110. At this point I would not recommend an A-200 or C-200 as they still have quite a few issues. Unless of course you can deal with a unit that doesn't yet work fully. Make sure you look hard and know full well that features are not working on the new PCH's before you dive in. Good luck! |

RE: Egreat vs popcorn hour ?
The Egreat line of products seem to be running the older sigma processor, so some stuff might not be doable on those in the long run. In the short term things will seem to work better but the future is not nearly as bright. The processor they are using has been around longer and therefore more of th ebugs have been worked out, but its not as capable as the newer processors the a-200 and c-200 run. Both the 200 models have not been out that long, but what i've thrown at mine so far seems to be running just fine. I couldn't be happier and owning the c200 i know the future is bright and things are only beginning to heat up. I look for alot of bugs to be fixed in the next few months and by summer i'm guessing the unit will look and function alot differently than it does now. Maybe i'm an optimist, but from what i've been reading things are in the works.
And honestly to me the Egreat units don't look as polished, they look like alot of other media players on the market which is basically an external hdd enclosure with some labels on the front :/ Keep in mind the egreat units can only handle upto 1tb of internal hdd space, or at least thats what it says in the specs anyhow. If you are looking for something for your parents, i'm guessing they aren't too knowledgeable about electronics and technology in general, you might opt for something that isn't a media tank as it might be easier for them to handle. If they feel the need later on they can always upgrade, but something tells me that won't be nessissary. Its an all brushed aluminum chassis that is VERY well done. The pictures really do not do it justice. This is a very simple and easy unit to use once set up. One of my friends actually purchased this unit for his parents and installed YAMJ on it and they can use it without issue. |

RE: Egreat vs popcorn hour ?
eGreat have some great 8635 NMT's. Their M34 was for the money on par with the A110.
Nowadays though eGreat have gone for the Realtek chipset and do not have the NMT firmware or NMT Apps. The extra cpu power of the 8643 make the A200, at a price lower than the A110 ever was, a very hard act to beat. If you want a NMT that it not far off finished in terms of firmware then that could be a reason to go for a 8635 NMT. However for the long run and future resale value the 8643 chip players have to be the only one to purchase now IMO. A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407 |

As it is for your parents I would say get an Egreat as it will be hassle free and the A-200 is basically guaranteed to be lots of hassle at present. |

If you mean it doesn't call attention to itself with flashy neon lights and a body kit then yes...its a very simplistic design that IMO is very very nice. I'm the type that prefers Lian Li cases that are extremely high quality yet simple and understated. I'm past my neon lights "look what I've got" stage but to each his own.

I have 2- M34a that are located in my kids rooms. That works great!!! I agree with krazypoloc The picture on the web site does not do the looks of the M34a any justice.
