PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation

PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install the latest test version of oversight using the CSI tool (tried versions 738 and 749)
2. After install is complete power cycle the PCH
3. When PCH is started again, you see the normal startup screen that displays your harddisk and other sources but you cannot do anything via the remote control anymore. You always get "Unable to process request" or nothing happens at all

When logging on to the PCH via telnet and entering the "top" command, I see that the process "wget.real" is taking almost all CPU time ...
When I edit the file on the PCH called "start_app.sh" and remove the line
/share/Apps/oversight/oversight.sh REBOOTFIX #{oversight} #{oversight}
and then reboot the PCH again, everything is OK again : I can use the remote again and the "wget.real" process is not running. Of course now the oversight service is not running and I cannot use oversight anymore :-(

When installing the stable candidate of oversight (version 571), I do not have this problem but then oversight is not showing any fanart ...

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
Hi,

first as you found out, Oversight can be removed via disabling followed by a reboot.

What is you exact NMT version (model & firmware)
also can you send your index.db file.

/bin/wget.real should be the real wget, so suprised that is hogging CPU unless the installation somehow copied oversight binary to /bin/wget.real. I'll review the installation script, and keen to hear if anyone else has had similar issues.

A bit of background here:
http://code.google.com/p/oversight/wiki/WgetWrapper

I'll update this page with some clear instructions for emergency disabling.

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
Hi Lordy,

Thanks for the quick reply and the explanation on wget.

My PCH is the A-110
Firmware Version : 01-17-091022-15-POP-403
NMT Apps Version : 00-17-091014-15-POP-403

I will email my index.db file since I see no way to post a file here on the forum directly ... ??

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
Thanks. That's a fair common setup and havent seem many reports of this issue.

I'm also puzzled why the real wget ( /bin/wget.real ) would eat CPU itself, unless my install scripts
somehow let it get overwritten under certain conditions.

I'm adding more sanity checks to oversight, so it will be 'self healing' in this circumstance.

Ie if oversight detected it has crashed, then a reboot will restore NMT function, and oversight will
run the simple (but slightly slower) way.

I'll give it a good testing at my end, before releasing.

In the mean time if you could perform a clean uninstall then install of the current latest version to see if the problem still occurs that would be useful.

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
I tried an uninstall followed by a fresh install of the latest test version but it didn't help ...
Is there a big difference between the installation of the stable candidate version and the test versions ?
The stable candidate version doesn't show this behaviour ....

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
There is a BIG difference! the stable version does not touch wget.
( see comments under r662-testing here )

I had expected the odd issue doing this, thats the main reason why I made it a testing version.

Which was working towards being the next stable version, but I'd really like to find out why its not working with your NMT,
as not many have reported this issue. But it is a showstopper for the few people it affects, so I'd like to fix it.

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
I put up a new version. It doesn't fix the problem but it should make it easier for people to get back to a working configuration.

If anyone has similar issues a simple reboot should fix.

Oversight will hopefully auto detect if it was killed (eg via a reboot) and then it will not re-install itself over wget again.

This will be detected by the presence of a file /share/Apps/oversight/conf/wget.wrapper.error wihch oversight will only create if it was terminated abruptly.

Also you can manually stop oversight masquerading as wget by deleting the file

/share/Apps/oversight/conf/use.wget.wrapper

and rebooting.

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
Thanks for the software update.
I tried it out but result was the same : the php and wget.real processes take up about all CPU time and the NMT is not reacting on the remote control anymore .
When typing "ps" on the NMT, I see the following for wget :
1244 root 1436 R wget -q -H --convert-links --header=Accept-Charset:iso-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 -U Syabas/01-17-091022-15-POP
There was no file /share/Apps/oversight/conf/use.wget.wrapper.error

When I removed /share/Apps/oversight/conf/use.wget.wrapper and power cycled the NMT things were more or less back to normal: wget was not taking any CPU time anymore (at least not visible) but still the php process takes a lot of CPU (average about 90% all the time with peaks to 99%).
Anyway, the NMT is back reacting on the remote control and all seems to be functioning fine including oversight.
It still remain suspicious that the php process is taking that much CPU for I don't know what ....
Would there be any trace files anywhere that could maybe tell more on what is going on exactly ?

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
really not sure there. Oversight doesnt use php at all. It runs entirely on the internal browser.
But most of the other web based apps run on the apache/php or lighttpd/php stack.

I would have liked to see the ls -l of /bin/wget.real just to check it is the official wget.

I think two bits of software are clashing somehow?

Or the combination of oversight and something else is causing the box to thrash somehow.

what apps do you have installed exactly ?

If I was a betting man I'd say its an NMT resource issue, but NMT memory usage is a bit mysterious to me.

Check memory usage in top (Virtual and %MEM) and see if anything looks odd?

There is no trace when oversight is pretending to be wget, because I wanted to keep the overheads low. (ironically!)

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
Hi Lordy,
Correction : after about 30mins, the CPU load is back to normal and the php process is not visible anymore via "top".
Thanks,
Lesly
I put back the use.wget.wrapper file and power cycled
When typing ls -l /bin, I see the following for wget
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 313816 Mar 11 20:22 wget
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 313816 Mar 11 20:22 wget.real

both wget and wget.real seem to be the same ...

The only other app I have installed is the Music Album Music Browser

RE: PCH not responding through remote control after oversight installation
Right. We are getting somewhere now. I lost my earlier bet. (thinking it was resource related)

And my first hunch has come true (post #2)

It looks like somehow oversight is copying itself to wget.real ! Interesting. I'll check the install scripts so see how that could
happen. It doesn't happen to everyone so it must be some odd logic somewhere.

can you post everything below #M_A_R_K_E_R_do_not_remove_me in /share/start_app.sh ?
