mpd is a music player daemon which runs as a server on a Unix box, in our case on the Popcorn, and plays music files to the Popcorn outputs.

It is controled by an mpd-client which connects to the network to pass on the commands to the mpd server. All types of clients PC, Unix, command line, mobile, etc are available.

The advantage is that you can play your music without having to have the TV-set turned on to navigate through your music; it is not using UPnP so is much, much more stable; it can play more audio files then the mono-player from Popcorn itself; you can use all your network attached devices which are accessible from the Popcorn as music stores; ...

A nice overview of the architecture can be found here

Look at the mpd wiki page here for more information.

Shadowcode

My mpc-client reports a 0.15.0 version for the mpd-server.

Is this a mistake in the version number used in compiling the 0.15.9 or has the wrong version been taken from the git.

RE: Music Player Daemon (MPD) 2010-04-04 v0.15.9
I have a few mpc and wma music files(only a small amount of this type of music, 95% is mp3 or flac). For the first time mpd starts playing them by default in this release ( i think you can choose this in config file)
The PCH has no native support for MPC files, perhaps you can disable this is in the final package. When these files are being played you'll hear a distorted sound, or is there perhaps a fix?

The PCH does have native support for WMA files, however files played through MPD are also distorted. Is there a fix for this?

Bye,
Alex

Configuration:
  • PCH A110
  • TV: PHILIPS 32PFL9604H/12
  • HDD internal: Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB, format: EXT3
  • Video output: HDMI, 1080p60
  • Firmware version: latest firmware and apps
  • Wired network: CAT5E

You enabled OSS-output, and the modules are available in that package, so it actually might be possible to make it work...
I thought it might work, but there's only one way to make really sure. So I tried this, and Yes! it worked. Not certain if this will be of any use to anyone though...

RE: Music Player Daemon (MPD) 2010-04-04 v0.15.9
Hi.

Thanks to Shadowcode for this mpd build.

I want to share my impression about this build and previous build from alanh (Music Player Daemon (MPD) 2009-10-01 Re-Release).

1. cue support

Both of this builds have a internal cue support.
I see only tracknumbers of songs in alanh's build:
Code:
/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/HARD_DISK/Apps/mpd # mpc playlist
>1) Gorky Park -
2) Gorky Park -
3) Gorky Park -
4) Gorky Park -
5) Gorky Park -
6) Gorky Park -
7) Gorky Park -
8) Gorky Park -
9) Gorky Park -
10) Gorky Park -
11) Gorky Park -

This is a playlist from new build (using the same flac file with embedded cue). A tracktittles appears. I'm happy Rolleyes.
Code:
/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/HARD_DISK/Apps/mpd # mpc playlist
>1) Gorky Park - Bang
2) Gorky Park - Try To Find Me
3) Gorky Park - Hit Me With The News
4) Gorky Park - Sometimes At Night
5) Gorky Park - Peace In Our Time
6) Gorky Park - My Generation
7) Gorky Park - Within Your Eyes
8) Gorky Park - Child Of The Wind
9) Gorky Park - Fortress
10) Gorky Park - Danger
11) Gorky Park - Action

External cue sheet not working on both builds. As I know external cue support will be in mpd version 0.16. May be do not wait for stable 0.16 version and try to build unstable 0.16 from git repository?

2. multichannel flac testing

I built some multichannel flacs to test. I know that output plugin can't support 24 bit output and reduce it to 16 bit, but I try to test with those sample files.
Here is some my testing results:
Code:
alanh's build
bits    samplerate (kHz)    channels    play or not    cpu load %
24    44.1    5.1    play    36
24    48.0    5.1    play    38
24    96.0    5.1    not play    76
24    44.1    2.0    play    13,5
24    48.0    2.0    play    14
24    96.0    2.0    not play    27,5
24    192.0    2.0    not play    49

Code:
Shadowcode's build
bits    samplerate (kHz)    channels    play or not    cpu load %
24    44.1    5.1    not play    97
24    48.0    5.1    not play    98
24    96.0    5.1    not play    98
24    44.1    2.0    not play    29
24    48.0    2.0    not play    30
24    96.0    2.0    not play    97
24    192.0    2.0    not play    98

As you can see with Shadowcode's build none of my sample files are not played. It was very strange. I decided that the error in libFlac configuring options, may be in fixed point option or someone else.

So I try to replace plugins/libFlac.so.8 (430196) with libFlac.so.8 (346748) from alanh's version. And it's work Big Grin. I got the same result with replaced libFlac.so.8 as in alahn's version.

Some notes about sample files that don't played. I tested it with through HDMI connection from my A100 to Yamaha receiver RX-V1800.
Multichannel 5.1 24/96 flac and stereo 24/96 24/192 flacs are not played over HDMI. So I decide to try digital coaxial connection in addition to hdmi. I turn on automatic source input in my receiver and try to play those files again. And these files were played through a coax connection Huh. Very strange Undecided.

This is my first impressions about this new build.
My wishes to developers:
- try to build 0.16 git version
- fix strange CPU load when playing multichannel flacs
- add a true 24bit output version of plugin as possible

With my hand, I propose to help in testing. Sorry for my broken English.

Best regards
Andrey

hi

thanks again shadowcode

Your new libmpdec.so.6 is better than mine with 23 % cpu usage but
had the same poor sound ,i think it is numeric noise like there are something wrong
with quantification bits it sound like mpd send wrong bit lenght format to mpcdec.

best regards

RE: Music Player Daemon (MPD) 2010-04-04 v0.15.9
Thanks alot SHADOWCODE for all your effort.

Things seem all right when i tested moving some music files to my internal HD .
But i couldnt find a way to make mpd see my main music library on the USB drive connected externaly to popcorn . I tried editing music_directory in mpd.conf such ways .

music_directory "/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/USB_DRIVE_A-1/Music/"
OR
"/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/USB_DRIVE_A-1"
OR
"/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/NETWORK_SHARE/[networkshare_name]/Music/"

restarted everything.checked through Minion.....No files....
edited the line in the mdp.conf file like

"/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/NETWORK_SHARE/[networkshare_name]/"

checked through Minion.... after awhile it started gathering my library files slowly.......YET after a restart of my PC AGAIN BLANK Database.
I installed GMPC.I tried again all possible music directories.when the directory was
"/opt/sybhttpd/localhost.drives/USB_DRIVE_A-1"
GMPC did the same thing it started gathering database after an "update database". and i was able to play them through PCH ..but still saying somewhere down the page that I have an empty database...And when i restarted GMPC things were going all the same.!!! gone again.

as you'll understand i'm a newbie..

Can you please tell me what am i doing wrong ? What should i do to make MPD accept my library on my USB HDD? Does mpd automatically (normaly) create its own database , do I have to do somethng to make it do? Or the Clients push it to do ?
My confiuration is:
PCH wired to router PC (XP) wireless. installed lighttpd 1.4.23-nmt2, Telnetd v1.14.1, Mpd v20100405-0.15.9, Mpd Audio plugin v20100405-0.15.9 (these two installed from this thread by CSI -install from file). 1TB internal, 1 TB external USB HDDs. All nmt apps running. Music is located under my USB HDD under /Music folder (in seperate folders like /Music/80s , /Music/90s , /Music/Albums ...etc.

I believe I went through all threads all wiki pages to solve this prob. for days but NO WAY.. ( i am not a linux guy by the way )
Your help will be very very appreciated.
Huh
Thanks in advance.

Tongue RE: Music Player Daemon (MPD) 2010-04-04 v0.15.9
Thanks for this release - I tested the standard mp3 support as well as last.fm support yesterday. And I have to say: works really well. SmileSmile

Only addition that comes to mind:
is there a possibility to actually see what is streamed from last.fm? I tried with MPoD (on the ipod touch) and also with the MPDJB interface. Both do not show any information what's currently played.

Thanks,
Markus.

Hmm. So mpd knows about what's playing?

Is there a Linux client which is able to show the currently played song information from last.fm? I tried gmpc on my Ubuntu box and this client also does not show any further information.

I think you get better replies on the mpd forum then here on the Popcorn-forum.

There on the mpd forum are the developers of the tool and the specialists.

Huh, that's interesting. Afaik libFlac doesn't have any special sort of options that might cause this behavior.
