(06-09-2010 05:36 PM)gduprey Wrote:  The part I don't like about this is it seems people are pitting high quality playback against a potentially simpler/nicer UI & newer streaming content. While that might hold true at the initial release of a Android based STB, and there will always be some low-priced players for folks who are happy with that level, it's almost inevitable that eventually, the devices are going to converge. I reject that false dichotomy that I can choose a simple/nice UI and streaming OR good codec/AV. And given the world has moved to digital, this isn't like before where in the analog world, there were real costs involved in super high-end playback. Recognizing there are differences in codecs and underlying codec accelerating hardware, bits are bits. Which means the barriers to high end/high quality AV have been lowered.

My guess is it'll work like this:
* a "first edition" android device will be developed. It'll have streaming support, reasonable but not exceptional codec quality/support and may not be able to do things like play rips, but will be able to play BD disks. It'll be a bit expensive.

* Second generation (6-8 months) -- a lower priced unit -- probably functionally the same as the first. And a series of other manufacturers coming out with their take, at least one of which is pitched toward higher quality (and likely more expensive). At least one box will allow playing rips over the network.

* Third plus (12+ month) -- all but the lower end units will have very respectable AV decoders/quality. Higher end units will exist, with marginally better codec support/quality and higher price tags.

Android is a great platform to build on and allows all box makers to have access to all sorts of add-ons and features. While Google has and could make a mis-step with this, I believe that there is enough pent up demand from AV box makers to stop re-inventing the wheel that this has a very good chance of getting off the ground and going.

I feel the C200 device right now probably has the high-end AV potential, but is hobbled by instability, flakiness, a pokey and un-inspired interface and limited "other" media support. They have time to make this work (possibly by going Android or possibly by making all the promises come true and then some), but that window is closing.

I'll be keeping my eyes open over the next 12 months. It'll be exciting, one hopes, as exciting as the high-end cell phone and tablet worlds are getting now. But I would not bet against this sort of technology convergence (quality and excellent user experience) -- Apple, if no one else, has proven that concept pretty well.

Gerry

I totally agree with you. That will be the future.

What would be neat would be to have GoogleTV as an NMT App. I'd like a device that does everything.

Here is the first look with video and question feedback for the Logitech Revue & GoogleTV from a Digitaltrends.com guest writer.

Looks quite interesting.

RE: Is Google TV going to steal the NMT show?
I think that NMT is the best system for media playing in this moment, but as in other worlds (videogaming,phones,etc...) the device's don't have a infinite longevity, so t's normal, that GoogleTV may take NMT down in the Market, but i'm sure that NMT will be able to fight back Smile

RE: Is Google TV going to steal the NMT show?
sounds like this thing will be coming out around september 29th. But from what ive seen they havent even mentioned what vidoe files are supported so until the xbmc team cracks this I think it pretty silly unless you have a nice cable or satilite subscribtion which I dont.

Wrong topic.... Is Google TV going to steal the NMT show?
Right topic...... Is NMT going to steal the Google TV show?

When will we run this on our NMT, the Sigma ARM can do Android... so what are they waiting for...

PCH-A100/A210/C200/A400 500GB EXT3 HDD<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Onkyo TX-NR1010<-->HDMIv1.3<-->Panasonic TX-P46S10

The inability to setup and configure the NMT should not be disguised as a defect of the box

They dont want to do a HDX. Andriod was offered ages ago by Sigma, but rightly in my opinion they gave it a swerve and are concentrating on the current NMT platform and getting it developed fully and bug free. HDX have both a new player and a new android player and neither are doing well and thereby the company also now seems to be struggling. As hard as it is to say sometimes No is the best answer.

Yeah.. Chris... corporate choices... short term.. long term.. both..
I the end of the day.. they got to ask themselves did we invest enough to safeguard our place in next years market...
HDX probably had the right ambition but was short on resources and capital...

A smart man once said: "Sustain in what you're doing and when you have something at hand, embrace it quickly"

Reading into it further you can see they are using some type of DLNA server to play these so who knows how good it will be. Googletv by itself offers no local media playback

RE: Is Google TV going to steal the NMT show?
Google has money and copyright holders love going after people with money. Take the realplayer dvd ripper, took less than a week to get an injunction. I really wouldn't expect your personal library to work for long if it works at all..

the new google codec uses a small subsection of mkv so this is probably the mkv support they are talking about.

my dvr does everything shows on the googletv website plus more.. nothing new, just says google on the screen.

RE: Is Google TV going to steal the NMT show?
Google TV is New. and they need to learn lot of things.
I believe next version will play Local files in many formats.
and hopefully also support the 3D and also other latest formats

and because they open the SDK and based on Chrome.
I believe the improvements and features will grow fast.

Logitech, Sony and other manufacturer need to listen to what user wants and release the newer version (stop the first version) and people will buy it.
