Transmission - settings.json
Here's the way this post is going to go. First I am going to whine. Then I am going to make a plea for help. Hopefully you will be understanding of the whine part, and if not, you won't let it influence your natural tendency to help
![]() The Whine Part ============== Why is it that every time you do a new install of Tranmission via the CSI it wipes out the settings.json file? Is this really necessary? I'd really like to protect my existing settings and add in whatever might be new myself - rather than have it crammed down my throat with each install (with no consideration for how I may have adapted it). Really, if more reasonable defaults for blocklist and encryption were used, I might not even care. But as it is I have my standards I like to maintain - and those (apparently) are not the same as the folks building out the settings, json distributed with the install. The Asking For Help Part ===================== Here's my problem. After installing Transmission, I can't edit the settings.json it or overwrite it with a back-up. I get an "Access Denied" message from my edit App. This is a problem. I have made sure that Transmission is not running (via CIS) and also made sure that the "Start at Boot" option is not enabled in case there is some process who won't let go of the thing. But no joy - even after restarting my C200 (presumably with all Transmission processes NOT running). But still the file is getting "Access Denied" when I try to copy, edit, overwrite. Can someone please give me a steer on how to either identify and kill whatever process is preventing me from editing the file or tell me a more suitable option for editing it? Any help is most appreciated. RE: Transmission - settings.json
Transmission since 1.9x restricts access rights to settings.json only to itself so you need to apply the chmod a+rw command to the file to allow reading and writing it to all.
I'm not quite familiar with 200 series but I believe lundman-shell add-on from CSI is used to execute Linux CLI commands on A/C-200. |

I'm a bit of a noob and don't know how to get around with Lundman shell at the moment. I was able, however, to accomplish the permissions tweak with the FileManager (+utils) from vaidyasr. Thanks for the bump to get me on the right track. All is well (until the next re-install of Transmission???). Cheers. RE: Transmission - settings.json
I managed to change the settings.json permissions with Lundmann's Shell to change username/password settings allowing to protect my Transmission. But as soon as I start it again, the settings revert back and the file permissions too! Is there really no way to enable user/pass protection to Transmission? I'm on version 2.00...

Even I changed something, restart rewert all settings back to default. I was successful with File Manager for NMT utility. First, make sure your Transmission service is stopped. Fire up the File Manager in your browser. You can use it to browse to the [Local Disk]/Apps/Transmission/.transmission. Then right-click on settings.json from the file list. Select "Properties" from the menu. You should then turn on all the check boxes related to permissions. Select OK. Then do a refresh on your list and you should see the permissions have been updated to all (777). Then you can edit it through your share with your preferred editor. Hope this helps. RE: Transmission - settings.json
I'm trying to change settings.json to update the ratio setting for transmission 2.12.
I do however get the permission error. Have installed Filemanager via CSI, can change the permissions but when a press OK and refresh screen nothing is changed, still shows 600 instead of the required 777. I did stopped the transmission service before I changed the permissions. How will I be able to change the settings.json file? |

Transmission 2.12 - settings.json A100 vs A200> Apples and Oranges?
I'm also trying to get this sorted out. Oddly enough, changing settings.json for Transmission 2.12 has a different outcome for an A100 opposed to an A200.
What I want to change: - Download folder - Add incomplete-dir - Add watch-dir On the A100: I stopped Tranmission I can change the permissions to 777 over telnet with chmod 777. I copy the file to my pc, edit it with notepad++, save it to another dir on my pc (so I have a copy of the original and of the edited one). Then I copy it to S:\Apps\Transmission\.transmission. I start Transmission,Transmission Remote and everything works like a charm. Then I reboot.... Settings.json is reverted to the original, access rights have changed back to 600. I open Transmission Remote, it connects fine, Tranmission works but all my settings are lost. Very annoying but hopefully changeable. On the A200 (new one, latest firmware): BTW : I only installed lighttpd, Oversight and Tranmission 2.12 on the A200 I stopped Tranmission I can change the permissions to 777 over telnet (build in) (with chmod 777. I copy the file to my pc, edit it with notepad++, save it to another dir on my pc (so I have a copy of the original and of the edited one). Then I copy it to S:\Apps\Transmission\.transmission. I start Transmission. I try to start Transmission Remote, but it can't connect. I try to connect to the webui, but the page is not found. Looking in the NMT Apps screen shows Torrent Starting... Then I reboot.... Settings.json is reverted to the original, access rights have changed back to 600. I again try to start Transmission Remote, but it can't connect. I try to connect to the webui, but the page is not found. Looking in the NMT Apps screen again shows Torrent Starting... I have to stop Transmission, reboot, chmod 777, copy the original settings.json back to it, and then after a reboot it will all work again. Naturally the last steps take some time, so it's faster to remove and re-install Transmission 2.12 again. Of course I want it work with my own edited settings and any help would be greatly appreciated. But isn't it very strange that both the NMT's react in totally different ways? The only thing that might be different is that I used Notepad++ of the bat and haven't changed settings of it. But I can't remember that I had to do that on my own PC.

RE: Transmission - settings.json
AFAIK the bulit-in Transmission and the one from CSI use different access ports: 8077 (not sure) and 9091. Also you won't be able to change the default download dir so simple in the CSI version - it is set in daemon.sh but not in settings.json (the option here is ignored).
I never used the built-in Transmission on my Egreat 31C (which is basically PCH A100 only with SATA) but Transmission 2.12 from CSI works with little problems. As for editing configuration files, the algorithm: - stop Transmission with CSI - connect via Telnet with PuTTY - run MC - edit configuration files with MC (F4) (OR - change "chmod" with MC - edit configuration files with notepad2 via Samba) - start Transmission with CSI never failed me. |

Hi Roman, the ports indeed differ but I could connect to 9091 (for CSI version) before editing. What is MC and where do I get it/install it? RE: Transmission - settings.json
2 Cherek
Quote:What is MC and where do I get it/install it? MC (Midnight Commander) is a two-paned file manager which simplifies many of the file operation on *nix systems. For 100 series it is included with telnetd from CSI. You simply need to type "mc" in a command line. MC runs under root so it has full access to player's file systems. For 200 series there are different releases of MC compiled by different community developers, which can be found here, but I would personally recommend the LTU package: http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=46319 The version 0.6x is quite advanced (though offering huge benefits for active torrent users) so for a beginner it is safe to install v0.5. |
