Installation issues linux
Hello All

As a new NMT but old UNIX/linux user I'm a little disappointed.

First of all, the general advice seems to be to change the system wide installation of java to Suns JRE. This is a bad advice since there is nothing against choosing a specific binary to run for each application. I presumed (wrongly) it followed the usual way and copied the tarball to /usr/src and unpacked it for reading the README. A little dazed and confused there was no install script other then the first instance of the startup script.

Second, most *nix systems are in a multiuser environment, certainly when they serv as filseservers. Therefore the "right click on file" is a bad decision, The (missing) install script should do a lot more, like;
[*] Choosing right java version
[*] Copying configurations files to /etc/myihome/
[*] Setting correct privileges and choose which user to run as. In a proper *nix way.
[*] Depending on the system, installing scripts in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d and/or /etc/init.d/ for daemon
[*] Setting up basic configurations like shares and themes.

Further, the binaries should be packed in both rpm and as debs completing the tarball. This combined will reduce the average users trouble installing MyiHome in a proper way.

RE: Installation issues linux
Not sure about the licensing for MyiHome software, but maybe your frustration might be better served to lobby the powers that be to make the software open source, release the source and then us posix folk could do what you are asking....
