RE: PCH C-200 Burning smell from Hard Drive Bay
Is it in a ventilated area?
Is this a high speed HDD? green or 5400 - 5900 rpm is the way to go PCH A-200 16GB USB -> HDMI -> Samsung LN46A650 | A200 -> Toslink -> Logitech Z-5500 (Harmony 700) PCH C-200 8GB USB -> HDMI -> Sharp LC46D64U (Harmony 550) Eversion/Whisper skin (custom MOD) + WHS V1 (15TB Q6600/4GB RAM ) -> Mediasonic HR82-SU3S2 (Backup) D-Link DNS 323 for sale |

RE: PCH C-200 Burning smell from Hard Drive Bay
Can you tell with the top off where it originates? HDD, C200 mobo or HDD slot mechanism.
Try connecting direct to the HDD to see if it is the HDD mechanism. Use a different cable, HDD, port, etc. to try and diagnose, as we can't see or smell your unit it's a little hard to be helpful. I can't recall any burning smell posts before. RE: PCH C-200 Burning smell from Hard Drive Bay
If the HDD is getting very hot I would say the smell is most likely from the drive's electronics overheating due to the drive overheating. What model drive is it? I would try what Chris57 suggested, connect the drive directly to the board (leaving it out of the caddy) and see if it still generates heat.

RE: PCH C-200 Burning smell from Hard Drive Bay
Apparently there is a design flaw in the c200 with some hard drives that overloads the power to the drive and hence causes extreme heat issues with the drive. In my case the heat from the drive had melted some of the internal wiring. Sending unit back for rma. Lucky I caught it soon, the whole thing could have caught on fire.
I suggest members switch off the unit completely if not in use.Btw I have 1 tb wd green |

RE: PCH C-200 Burning smell from Hard Drive Bay
Maybe your unit was defective because some users have managed to fit in 2 2TB HDDs and have no overheating issues. It could also be your wiring in your home, could be a 110V VS 220V thing, it could be anything at this point in time.

RE: PCH C-200 Burning smell from Hard Drive Bay
I don't know if it would be related but in my htpc days, the common reason for overheating htpc's were because they were put into an entertainment cabinet that closed up and there was no fresh air getting to the unit to properly create a cooling circle of new cooler air in, warm air out.

Please tell us more about this as I don't want my house buring down. It's not just a he said she said thing is it? You do have some substance to this statement as it is very inflamatory

overheated or near burning x200's should not be cooled in a bucket of water as this will void the warranty thereof.
Not even for a short while by adding ice cubes... So that's why my C-200 doesn't work anymore. I can't believe they didn't add that to the Quick Start Guide, or at least in the online manual that just came out. ![]() (07-21-2010 06:16 AM)coolrider Wrote: Apparently there is a design flaw in the c200 with some hard drives that overloads the power to the drive and hence causes extreme heat issues with the drive. By the way man, I'm sorry you've had this issue. Hopefully a new unit won't have the same issues. Did you RMA the mainboard in the C-200 or the HDD?
