[Feature] [Feature Req] VOTE IN THE POLL!! Option to disable Popcorn Upscaling - let your TV/AVR upscale

Video [Feature Req] VOTE IN THE POLL!! Option to disable Popcorn Upscaling - let your TV/AVR upscale

Switch resolution output based on source input

Most TV's and audio/video receivers today on the market have very good upscaling capabilities. All your digital video content could look pretty slick on your new TV/projector or with your new AVR.

The problem is, your Popcorn is upscaling for you! The upscaling capabilities of todays TVs and AVRs are superior to what your popcorn could do. Thats ok, the Sigma chip was designed for other purposes.
A Solution
A great solution would be an option like Native in the Video Output settings dropbox. This setting would enable the popcorn to switch to the nearest default TV resolution and frame rate just before playback.

This way, all the upscaling would be offloaded to your TV/AVR/external video processor. Which it was designed to do this in the first place!
How it could work
This is how the feature request could work, it is open for debate of course and please do if you don't agree!
  1. If aspect pixel ratio is not 1:1 on the played file, use popcorn scaler. (no way an external scaler could do this right)
  2. Determine the lowest resolution considering both the width and height resolution without scaling down. Use the video zoom setting to fill up the difference (if there is)
  3. Check connection type supports preferred output resolution. If not, go to highest supported resolution.
  4. If frame rate could be matched with progressive/interlaced resolution, do that. If not use progressive 60hz if supported. Or 1080p24 if supported.
  5. Set video mode and playback.
Mapping file resolutions to video modes
These are all the default TV resolutions that are currently supported as output resolution on the popcorn. I calculated the file resolution by multiplying and dividing the width of the output resolution with the aspect ratio. The output resolution has no relation to this topic, and is only there to show how I calculated the file resolution in order to map the 480i-1080p modes to the actual file resolution.

Werner told me in a shoutbox conversion that we should use a poll for the votes. So anyone who voted as a message, please vote in the poll as well... more votes means more priority for Syabas.

The following users have voted yes in the thread, but not in the poll yet. I will try to keep this up to date, so Syabas could add up the thread votes to the poll votes:

I have a REON HQV video processor in my Onkyo Receiver which is probably better than the Sigma upscaler... Adn I think there are more users like us, who have for instance a DVDO or OPPO upscaler

For some reason this one always falls on deaf ears.

I'm sure we aren't the only people who would find this feature useful.

It would also be a big draw among the serious AV enthusiast crowd who really care about picture quality. No other streamer that I'm aware of has a "video direct" mode. If the C200 did have such a feature it would instantly become the high end streamer of choice!

Surely it can't be that hard to impliment, can it?

This gets my vote as well.

If you wanna spread the word, follow what the Playon proponents did by making your signature like this;

Code:

Definitely one of the things I'd like to see implemented. Especially considering the amount of AV receivers with good scalers out there.

Please vote for VIDEO DIRECT support for the C200 here

Those with external scalers can promote this cause by posting information regarding the difference using a internal scaler from the C200 to a external one. Post pictures Smile
