Hi !
Since few days i have a serious pb while watching videos or copying files on my NMT. All was working perfectly but these days, when i'm doing a copy on it from my PC it's freezing... Again, when I'm watching a movie or a TV-show it freeze again after few minutes. ![]() I was thinking about heat but it seems to be okay on this side. Maybe now that i've more files on my NMT, therefore a HDD more filled (trays) appear this bug ? It's an 2T WD Black Caviar. Someone knows something about this strange feature ? I have to hard reboot the NMT many times before it will work again... ![]() Thanks in advance ! |

RE: NMT freeze due to WD Caviar Black - WD2001FASS ?
The WD Caviar Black drives need to be cooled actually. I do have quite a few of those, too. If you don't cool them, especially, if they are in a non-ventilated case, they actually may die from overheating...

I was hoping it won't be that but it seems so...
I'll try that way then... Thanks for your quick reply, I inform you of the progress ! |

Actually, I find the 2TB WD black drives run even hotter then the 2TB Seagate drives. Both are running at 7200RPM. Matters not, neither model should be used inside a PCH. You want a 5400RPM drive and/or lots of cooling.

Yep, hard drives don't like it that hot really.. they're running fine for a while, but after a while they just don't; that's probably the issue here. Ok so i need to placed 60x60 fans inside isn't it ?
For example one on the back (as expected) and maybe one on the side. |

RE: NMT freeze due to WD Caviar Black - WD2001FASS ?
Ya, the OP would be better off saving that drive for a computer and buying a 5400 RPM (green) drive for the PCH.
BTY: I love the black drives, I have at least 15 of them now but they are a bad selection for media players. C-200, A-110 both playing from a DIY Linux Raid 5 server. Ok so I bought a Green Caviar (no need to cool it with the expected slot on the back ? Work finely on NMT (WD20EARS) ?) and I'll put the black caviar on an external cooling case to plug it on a usb port of the NMT; what do you think of that ?

Your kind of jumping from the frying pan into the fire here? Before using the drive you should read this thread; http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showth...?tid=39738 I have used the black drives in a fan cooled aluminum USB case. When your running a black drive hard, even in free air, you can't pick it up with your bare hands. Gives you some idea how hot they run. C-200, A-110 both playing from a DIY Linux Raid 5 server. RE: NMT freeze due to WD Caviar Black - WD2001FASS ?
I don't have bought the WD20EARS yet, I was waiting for your response but I've seen the thread you talk about a few days ago but the HDD can't work just puting it on the NMT ? What's wrong with that product...
Wich one is just "plug & play" ? The WD20EADS maybe ? 32/64M of cache make a diference here ? Yeah for the Black Caviar, I have take it when NMT freeze and wow, it was just impossible to take it with hands how hot it was ! But if you have used black drives in fan cooled alu case, you can confirm me that it work fine then ? |

What's wrong with that product... The difference is the EARS drives use a 4096 byte sector vs a 512 byte sector that drives have been using up to this time. 4096 will be the future standard but the PCH units can't deal with them yet, when they are used as the NMT apps drive. The EADS drive would be fine but it seems that many here like the Samsung green drives better. Cache makes little or no difference here. The NMTs are too slow to take advantage of larger caches. Quote:The difference is the EARS drives use a 4096 byte sector vs a 512 byte sector that drives have been using up to this time.Ok so if for example NMT apps are on a USB Key it's working for data without align EARS ? I think the C200 can handle NTFS disks for data (not apps) with no issues. And for my WD2001FASS, first when i've bought it, i've directly put it on the NMT & let him format the HDD with installing NMT apps. So if i've understood it's formated in ext3 right ? Is it concern about the byte sector's you mentionned ? NMT apps are working fine for me, exept heat issues... In resume, if I buy a EARS, i've to : 1. plug in a USB key into C200. 2. choose it as the destination for NMT apps and let the C200 format it to ext3 and install the apps. 3. plug in the EARS to win7 and format it to NTFS, to 4096 allocation unit size. 4. plug in the HDD into C200 and it's working for data (movies...). Or do the method 1 explained in your thread. |

RE: NMT freeze due to WD Caviar Black - WD2001FASS ?
Hmmm i think of one thing, my NMT apps are actually on the Black Caviar, if I put it on a cooled case & plug on NMT's usb it will work, no ? NMT apps will start & data available as if WD2001FASS was internal ?
