No audio when playing m4v files
Hello everyone

I am a brand new A200 owner and have a difficulty with audio in m4v files. I hope that you can help me solve it. First, a little bit of history.

I own a large collection of DVDs and decided to rip them to a network attached storage device. This has taken me about 3 months to complete. I have succeeded in creating a library of m4v files that have been generated using a video transcoder tool: Handbrake 0.9.4 running on an Apple Mac. All of these files play back correctly using a Mac media player : VLC 1.1.3.

In addition, I have been able to play these files using a Sony Playstation3. Twonkymedia streaming server runs on my NAS unit. I was reasonably happy with this with the exception of the PS3 user interface. This is a bit awkward to use because I have about 400 movies. Scrolling through them on the PS3 takes a quite a bit of time. Then I came across YAMJ and, in turn, the Popcorn Hour A200. I decided to buy one to improve my 'video jukebox'.

My A200 arrived last week and I have set it up and can access the files on the NAS unit. Incidentally, I also have all of my CD collection converted to mp3 on the same NAS unit.

The A200 is connected as follows:

HDMI cable from A200 to my Pioneer plasma screen media box.
Optical digital cable to from A200 to my Yamaha amplifier.

I do not have speakers on the plasma screen. All audio goes through my multimedia amplifier to a 5.1 speaker setup.

My problem: I do not have audio when playing any of my m4k files. I do have a picture, though.

I do get sound when playing my mp3 files. My problem seems to be isolated to the m4v files. In the setup screen for the A200, I have the following:

HDMI audio : Off
Surround Sound : 5.1
AAC : Analogue (PCM)
WMP Pro : Analogue (PCM)
DTS : Digital (RAW)
Dolby Digital : Digital (RAW)
- DRC : Off

I am convinced that I have done something wrong during the process of creating my library using the Handbrake application. All the DVDs were encoded the same way with audio set as source Dolby 5.1 and codec AC3 Passthru.

I have used MediaInfo to produce a sample of my files for you.

Many thanks for reading my post.

RE: No audio when playing m4v files
AC-3 Audio does not work in mp4 containers (m4v is just the Apple name for an mp4 container) - when using AC-3 audio output container should have been selected as mkv
Basically AC-3 are not part of the original mp4 specifications which the chipset in the PCH were designed after (allthough it has recently been added to the specifications)

To play these on the PCH you will need to remux to mkv im afraid.

I notice another problem with your encodings - in handbrake you have selected "same as source" for framerate - but thats a very bad idea because this causes Handbrake to create videos with non standard variable framerate (A completely idiotic implementation by the author of Handbrake) as you can see from your media info . Instead make sure you manually select the correct framerate as the source to force a constant framerate of 25 fps which adhere to normal videostandards.

Frame rate mode : Variable
Frame rate : 24.977 fps
Original frame rate : 25.000 fps
Minimum frame rate : 12.500 fps
Maximum frame rate : 25.000 fps

Living room: C200/A200/A100 HDMI to Pioneer KURO KRP-500A plasma / Denon AVR 3808 / KEF 5005.2 / B&W DM685
Kids room: C200/A110 HDMI to Panasonic 42PZ85, Optical to Logitech Z5500.

Oh no...

I'll do some re-encoding in that case. I'll find a combination that works with the A200. Thanks very much for your help and advice about the Handbrake frame rate.
