Smart Phone??
I'm thinking of getting a smartphone mainly to try to knock out a particular app idea.
I know the iphone app market is saturated and was thinking of going android... but I I mentioned it to one mate (an Apple fanboy), he dismissed HTC saying it crashed a lot, I half didn't believe him, but then I met someone the next day who owns one, and they complained about the same thing! That's a pretty big issue for a mobile phone and I'm surprised it never seems to get mentioned in online reviews? Any opinions on this? I had dabbled with personal organisers a while back (Psion 3a/5 - Pason? ) but realise you can spend a lot of money on something that gets used for about 1 year. But the new Smartphone's look interesting again... Esp the App stores

Hi,
I've got a HTC desire and no problem with it yet =) Currently using it with UMC but still working on it. Maybe we could start an android project for the nmt |

I'm on an HTC Hero 2.1 and it never crashes, and has NEVER crashed. Some of the apps I'm trying for the c-200 dont work as well as I would like and I've raised a few queries with some of the teams but I can catagorically state that my ANDROID has NEVER crashed, and has NEVER been fully rebooted to recover itself. iphone/android decision will be personal and the iphone does look good. Not sure it's got any secure browser access built in, and it doesn't open passworded docs as far as I know...... just don't dispense android out of hand on one persons assumption. Hopefully you'll get some deceent feedback... and maybe I'm the exception. ps The only issue I had was when the firmware was upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1. It went cleanly enough but the date/time went way back to the dark ages. The symptom was starnge.. and I only noticed that the app store wasn't working. Set the date and all ok. That's not a showstopper to me. pps Psion 3a??? That's going back around 10 years or more. Mine sits in the bathroom for solitaire. Still great for crossword anagrams too! |

RE: Smart Phone??
Hi Lordy
I have a HTC Desire and rate it.. yes it has it's moments (slow downs etc) but no crashes Android does allow for multi tasking which apple doesnt so there's a lot of talk about Task Killers and their merits. I use one so if my phone slows I kill all the apps running in the background and it's then fine. In terms of use it's very good (but again with the usual quirks you get with any technology... I'm thinking the A110 here ;o)... ) I have downloaded EyeController which means I can use it to work the NMT but as yet I havent tested it. One app I do use and LOVE is the Squeezecontroller App for my squeezeboxes and it's amazing - actually better than the SB remote control! I think some crashes are caused by rogue apps Also the 2.2 firmware allows apps to be saved on the SD card and I wonder is that will cause any issues. Overall though I think the Desire is great but I'm also not a big enough Fanboy not to be able to acknowledge Iphones quality.. errrrr that REALLY stuck in my Apple hating throat! |

RE: Smart Phone??
I have a HTC Hero in the UK. Rooted and run VillianROM 12
Which basically means that I got tired of waiting for T-Mobile to roll out the v2.1 upgrade. Once I got the ROM stable (By that I mean I read the instructions properly) I've not had any problems. Occasionally the phone will shutdown without warning because the battery is flat, but that's usually because I have a music app running, GPS + Maps, data downloading or am doing something equally intensive. Most of the FC's (Force Closes - Android's equivalent of a crash) are usually due to bugs in an application, but a FC *NEVER* shuts the phone down. For me, it comes down to one thing... if you like being told how to use your device and what you can and can't do with it (including how to hold it), then go for Apple. Otherwise make the smart choice an go for Android ;-) P.S. I'll be getting the Desire HD when my contract ends in a couple of months

RE: Smart Phone??
I came from an iPhone 3G to a HTC Desire on 2.1.
We got a deal at work so I know 9 people using them. iPhone was simple and easy to use but not as good as the HTC even with the jailbreak. The HTC is just so flexible. I have some apps on the HTC that sometimes stop working properly and a reboot fixes it. My wifes phone sometimes has issues with Facebook and Email but tbh that could be a user problem! ![]() The phone hasn't ever crashed on me and AFAIK it hasn't with the others. I've tried mooh's UMC app, it was dead easy to try on the HTC, just bluetoothed it. Would have been a different story on my iPhone. I had to sync with iTunes and all that bullsh*t just to add an .mp3. RE: Smart Phone??
Hi,
I have Samsung GalaxyS I9000 with Android 2.1 and so far I have never seen any crashes except lags but hopefully Antroid 2.2 should address that. I use the EyeController and the ES File Explorer (ftp) with my C200 and they work great. I am yet to find a good DLNA/uPNP app that the C200 can browse into my android but maybe someone will come up with a decent app someday. The 'Allshare' app on the samsung galaxyS doesnt work that with C200. If anyone knows any decent DLNA server app for Android please share. -mustaali |

And these two companies now smack of commercialism to the extreme.. pay for this, pay for that, screw the customer. |

RE: Smart Phone??
I have the Galaxy S and i love it, the power of this phone is so great, the screen is amazing and i would never touch a LCD again after using the Samsung, the Samsung has a SGX 540 GPU chip (iphone 4 has a 535), the CPU is also almost the same as in the Iphone 4, i really can't complain about that phone, the Desire for sure is not more powerfull, the Snapdragon CPU is simply slower compared to the Samsung CPU, the Desire doesn't have a extra GPU chip and the the Desire has an LCD

RE: Smart Phone??
I like the Sony SLCD and don't compare the "Desire HD" with the old one.
It should be much faster! I think it has built-in a Snapdragon MSM8255. ------------------ For me the new HTC Desire HD is faster than the Galaxy S! http://www.htcinside.de/images/artikel/2...gpu_01.jpg GPU Adreno 205: Quote:This GPU features dedicated 2D Open VG graphics hardware along with 3D hardware which provides faster, higher-quality 2D rendering, simultaneous use of 2D and 3D, and lower power use. RE: Smart Phone??
the Test you linked is nothing which you could use, it shows benchmark results with different Android Versions, you can't compare a Android 2.1 vs Android 2.2, about the GFX the PowerVR SGX 540 is currently the fastest GFX chip which is built into a Smartphone, it is limited to 56fps because the SAmoled Screen doesn't support more then 56fps, same is for SLCD it doesn't support higher Rates as 60fps, so you won't see higher results.
Beside that the HTC has only a 1230 mAh battery which is a shame compared to the Samsung which has a 1500 mAh battery and the Samoled screen consumes less power then a LCD. Some results from my phone ![]() Quadrant Benchmark: 2418 Punkte (the Result from the link shows the bad idea to implement RFS as filesystem, my Result is using ext4 )The V8 and SunSpider makes only sense if both are at the same System so if later this month Samsung release the final 2.2 Android build then the benchmark makes sense.
