Of these 3, which NAS would you buy?
I'm in desperate need of a best-in-class NAS that will stream uncompressed 40gb BDMV folders to multiple devices. After doing a little research there are 3 that I've narrowed my results down to. All of them are expandable in terms of storage, so I basically want the best performance. If you know something about these things and/or have done research yourself, please vote for which one you feel would fit my needs best. Thanks a bunch in advance!!!!!!

RE: Of these 3, which NAS would you buy?
Well your bluray playback doesn't take much power from storage device so almost anything will do. However non-intel/amd cpu units will have issues with several players playing them or copying while playing so make sure you get a modern model. your choices are all intel so your good there.
I know someone around the forum recently purchased the synology, I haven't heard to much but I know the key factors in their purchase were mixed size drives and the 5 drive expansion chassis they offer so they can add more drives years from now to it. Check out their forums for success with drives. you need to be very careful about what type of drives you add into an raid unit. because of how green drives turn themselves off fast you might get a negative experience because you saved $5 on drives. The same advice goes with the thecus. I don't know much about modern thecus or anyone running them lately.. Hopefully someone here knows but it mith be worth asking in the thecus forums if theres any users playing media to sigma based players and how they find it. WHS.. It's price makes it serious contender, and the extras for media ripping and storage like mymovies you can add to it make it hard to not think about.. I recommend the 490 instead of the 495, especially if you can catch one of the 25% off sales at hp, newegg, provantage, mwave, etc.. the 495 is exactly the same but slightly more powerful cpu and larger included drive. however its not a 2TB drive so in my eye, the 490+replace the drive is cheaper than the 495. If you find you need more power in a year or two you can update the cpu on your own but I don't know a single person that has needed to change it so I'm comfortable to say storage+some extras+pch usage you don't need the extra power. Acer makes some nice whs also. |

I use an old HP Mediasmart470. I stream all my movies from this old workhorse and it works just great! Just my 2 cents!!

RE: Of these 3, which NAS would you buy?
I think the synology beats the qnap right now because of its mixed drives but still raid ability. There's also a lot better plugin support.
however for a home media storage device, the extras that whs can do like auto-rip via a plugin might outweigh everyone else... |

RE: Of these 3, which NAS would you buy?
My WHS is a phenomenally powerful and useful machine that continues to handle more and more of my general media duties, so the HP takes my vote. All three are great, capable units, but I like that the WHS can not only store media, but selectively back it up, download it, and rip it as well. Those HPs are powerful little gadgets.

I have a Qnap TS-859 Pro and it works great. I'd definitely recommend a Qnap product.

(01-05-2011 06:06 PM)xua Wrote: Which of these NAS's support wake on lan from C200? Wake On LAN (WOL) is a feature for ethernet, not the C200. But in answer to your question, yes, the WOL is supported properly as the few times the device has gone to sleep its come back up. It's rare though, as 99% of the time, I leave it up for various things and let the drives spin down before the whole unit goes down. I have a Synology DS1010+. I'm running 5 disks (mixture) in their Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) format. SHR allows for dynamic resizes of the RAID container and RAID5 support. Here's a review of the hardware for the DS1010+ I stream everything from this and have my PCH C200 set to 10/100. I'm using SAMBA for networking and have no problems with it. There's CAT6 cable for the long runs and a gigabit (cisco) switch between the C200 and the DS1010+. I get no stutter on anything. The C200 is diskless. If you're buying all new disks, AVOID buying them from one supplier, that helps avoid the "death by batch" scenario, which I have seen first hand. RAID5 will protect against a single disk loss, NOT MULTIPLE. Also RAID is a means of protecting you against a disk failure, it's NOT a backup mechanism, as you can still "delete" something and it's gone. I've tried the Seagate disks, but avoided them for now as they have vibration issues. Green Power (GP) disks have associated problems with unloading their heads and don't have TLER RAID firmware (Time Limited Error Recovery). Have a look through the user forums and be sure to check out the Drive Compability lists. There are usually two, the official list and the user list. In short, would I recommend or buy another Synology product. YES. They're not cheap though because if you check out the specs, they have a faster CPU and more expansion. Keep in mind that more CPU means better write/read performance on all these devices, as their RAID is implement in software NOT HARDWARE. I get 115MB/s reads and ~80-90MB/s for writes, using Filezilla and a single operation. I have no problems reading/writing to the device with my Windows PCs or Mac while my wife is using the PCH at the same time. |

RE: Of these 3, which NAS would you buy?
I have what is now quite an old Synology NAS, the 4 bay CS407.
Like the poster above I use CAT6 cabling and have gigabit switches for my internal local network. I use only simple shared folders on the NAS, basically Samba access and can stream 1:1 Bluray rips without any problems. Watched Incpetion with its mind blowing visuals a fortnight ago which must be getting pretty much to the top bitrate of BD discs. Even though its an older NAS the webUI is still the latest that runs on the new machines and subject to cpu power will remain that way. I dont bother with any Synology server apps prefering to let shares handle my media. A400: SSD+SD Card(Apps), HDMI A300: USB(Apps), HDMI C200: USB(Apps), BD SH-B083L(SB01), HDMI CAT6 Wired Network: TV TX-P42G20, HP ProCurve 1400-8G, Netgear GS-608/605, Synology CS407 |
