[AVI] Subtitles not working (.srt) with .avi movie
I have an .srt subtitle file with the same file name (except the extension) as the movie. They are both in the same folder.

The movie has the extension .avi and resolution 720p.

I cannot get the subtitle to work at all. I also pressed the "subtitle" button on the remote control but nothing happens.

The subtitle is checked and works fine on my PC. Any idea what might be the reason? Any other who have had a similar problem? Latest firmware installed.

Do you have this problem with all your movies or just with one? Some ideas you may try:

-Try to find alternative source for your subtitle.
-Open the .srt file with Subtitle Workshop and save it again to SubRip (.srt) format just to make sure it is .srt (and not just renamed to .srt)

A further suggestion. Have you selected your subtitle language in setup? If you dont select in setup then they dont display even if they are fine.

setup>preferences>subtitle language

setup>preferences>subtitle language

Thank you, that solved it. It was set to "none".

I have the same problem too.
I've tried all the tips presented here but it just does not work. BTW, the same thing works fine with Media Player.

Manual selection in setup did work, but how hard is to make the subtitle selection on the fly? Instead of getting out of movie play, and back and forth from setup.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong with my subtitles (.srt) but they don't work.

I downloaded a movie with sub and the sub works perfectly.

I use gordian knot to encode in Divx and I use SubRip to extract the sub in .srt.

When I open the .srt (in notepad) of both movies I don't see any difference..

Thx

I use a mkvmux with either avi or h264 files, however, for me the subfile .ssa works the best, there are converter from srt2ssa.

Try x.264 as a video converter, smaller files and much better result, if you use audioencoder aac, same result there.

I have always used .avi or divx before, but now I´m using h.264 and aac with .ssa subtitle and it works like a charm!

If you like you can use Nero Digital to encode a dvd, then you demux the files and put in video, audio and sub with mkvmux. Nero digital use a dvdsub and that wont work with Popcorn!

To demux Neros .mp4, you use "Yamb"!

All programs are free except for Nero, but that is a cheap solution!

I ripped the sub again and I saved it in .ssa but when I try to play the movie, the PCH stays on buffering 5-10 min and return to the menu.

Gordian knot comes with vobsub but the .sub don't work either. I'm gonna try to convert the .sub of vobsub to .str

Thx

Here's a quick how-to to get from idx/sub to .srt from a forum member:-

I have used Subresync (part of the Vobsub program) and as Alex says its 5 minutes work and it is easy to use.

Just Download Vobsub
It will install and ouy can launch the Subresync.exe program
* Open up the extracted (if rared) .sub file.

*Select Save as and select the format you want to save it as (hint .srt for NMT)

Then the graphic text will popup and you ned to learn the OCR the characters by watching the pictures and selecting the propitiate key for the marked red area it wants to learn to recognize.

*You may have to "Extend" for chars like ? : "

Its really simple and accurate, and yes you will have to learn it bot normal chars, Italics, Bold and Upper Case but its pretty fast. I just did a whole movie in about 7 minutes. (I did a test so I could write up this guide properly)

I open the .sub file and when I click on save as, Subresync crash....

When I choose "French" in the subtitle setup of the PCH. Do I need to specify something for the .srt file?

My .sub, .srt and .ssa work perfectly with VLC player

Is there a difference if I play the files from the HD or MyIhome?

This .sub file is text or binary? If you open it with Windows Notepad, what do you see? Readable text or just a bunch of gibberish? If the file is in binary it will not work with the PCH.
