2TB Samsung Spinpoint for $80!! Need feedback!
Hey guys,

There a 2TB Samsung Spinpoint on newegg.ca for $88CAD all in. That's the best deal I've seen yet. But I've never had a Samsung HDD before. Any complaints? Should I get it? Will it fail in a year?

I've only ever used Seagate and Caviar Greens and never had any problems.

Oh and this will be going in my PC, not PCH. So PCH compatibility does not matter.

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive with coupon CEMCZZZN32. It's a 72 hour sale so any quick feedback would be great!

Thanks in advance!

The f4 is an advanced format drive..

I've used the f1's and really happy with them.

This is really tempting to get, I have a 2 TB WD Green Drive which I got for 99$ back in May, should I bite the bullet and grab a 2 TB Sasmsung Spinpoint F4?

I just had a spinpoint F2 that failed in the first month, but this is a really good price.

Quote:Advanced Format is a generic term pertaining to any sector format used to store data on the magnetic disks in hard disk drives that exceeds 512 to 520-bytes per sector. Advanced Format is also considered a milestone technology in the history of hard drive storage, where data has been processed in 512 byte increments since the inception of the hard disk drive in 1956. Changing the sector format convention to larger data sectors such as the 4,096-byte structure used in the first generation of Advanced Format technologies, utilizes the storage surface area more efficiently while enabling the integration of stronger error correction algorithms to maintain data integrity at higher storage densities.

Sounds good to me. I do like however how the Caviar Green's shut off when not being used. The large drives in my PC are only used about 2 hours a day and my PC is on 16 hours a day.

Maybe I'll just wait to find a WD down at that price. I still have about 125GB free so that should last me a couple more months...

Putting a 7200rpm drive in a PCH is not smart, and is a sure fire way to have heat problems.

Not to mention that you don't need 7200rpm for media files.

5400 drives will easily sustain the rates that most nas's can read/write.. would I use this for my OS? no but for media storage, I think its a smart choice..

Big warning on the Samsung F4 2Tb it's Advanced Format 4k sector HDD. If you intend using the HDD as your NMT Apps install make sure you follow the WIKI guide or you can see as much as a 50% performance hit:-

I just bought 2 in the past week.

I use NTFS partitions and they work a-ok.

I had my old content on WD 1TB so to save myself time I bought a Sata disk duplicator to clone the 1TB drive to the 2TB. Once done I then used windows Diskpart to expand the partition to 2TB and put on the C200.

A200 connected to 32" Samsung UA32C5000
C200 connected to Denon 1610 AVR and 42" LG 42LH50YR
Encore ENHGS-500 5 port Gigabit switch.
